I quite like admin jobs. Sure, they can be menial and dull, but it's better than having to think for a living. The only thing that got on my nerves when I was doing admin jobs was when bosses expected me to care. Y'know, I'd do my work right because I couldn't be bothered getting into trouble... not because I wanted to go the 'extra mile' for 'the team'. Being the kind of person who loves to watch how people behave, an admin job is perfect. So with that, I'm kinda looking forward to Admin, a new sitcom being piloted by BBC Three. The show follows the misadventures of The Admin Team at Fox Carter & Co, a 'no win no fee' law firm in Manchester and showcases some new Brit talent as well as some people you might recognise.
Straight out of school into a job they don't want, Darrel (Chris Hannon), Kenny (Christian Foster), Asif (Abdullah Afzal), Shelley (Rachel Rae) and Tania (Jessica Hall) are going nowhere fast. The 'gang' are looked down on by the solicitors they work for and really, all they want is to kill seven hours a day and earn a bit of cash. Of course, to get a show like this right, you need to get the team leader spot on. In Admin, we get Gloria (Sian Reeves - Northern Lights, Cutting It) who has been at the company for years. She thinks she runs the place, but in reality she drives everyone mad, particularly Mike (Neil Fitzmaurice - Phoenix Nights, Peep Show) the long-suffering Supervising Solicitor. Darrel wants to be Mike's right hand man. Gloria wants to be his right hand woman. Mike just wants the post to go out on time. Yep. Spot on.
In this pilot episode there's a promotion up for grabs and Darrel sucks up to and tries to impress boss Mike, to bag the job. Tania is pregnant and confronts solicitor Danny (Jarrod Cooke) who is probably the dad - well she's narrowed it down to five. Asif comes a cropper when his attempt to impress his dad (Kulvinder Ghir - Goodness Gracious Me, Bend It Like Beckham), by pretending to be a hotshot lawyer goes belly up and indie kid Kenny ends up in a saxy situation with jazz-loving solicitor Lee Ann (Chereen Buckley - Thieves Like Us).
If this show is well executed, which I'm hoping it is, then we should be in for a treat. It's been written and created by first time writer David Isaacs, and is based on his own experiences as a supervising solicitor in a Manchester law firm. I think it might be unfair to make comparisons to The Office at the moment, but if the two share anything, I hope Admin captures the stale air, the hum of the photocopier and the long silences that pervade through working hours. Could be a good one this!
Admin will be shown on BBC Three on Monday 12th May 2008 at 11pm
