Speaking to mates about Phoo Action, one phrase kept coming up again and again and again: “Looked great, didn’t undertand what was going on and it was far, far too long.” Myself, I thought that there were a lot of good things in it – Jaime Winston was ace, the Jamie Hewlett-sinpiured mutants were terrific, and it was the closest thing to Adam West-era Batman that’s been seen for ages. It was mad and fresh, and there was loads of great music. But. But, but, but… it was a total mess. The news today that it is to be made into a series is very welcome, but here’s what needs to happen to make it really good.
1. Make it into half an hour episodes. An hour was just too long. I was actually starting to get bored with the story after 40mins and wanted them to wrap it all. It needs to be leaner, quicker and more concise. Half an hour episodes are perfect.
2. Concentrate more on the main characters. The joke with the William and Harry look-alikes was funny for about five minutes, but I wasn’t expecting them to go on and be such large characters in the show. Concentrate on Whitey and Terry and it’ll be better. More suggestions after the jump…
3. Give Jessica Hynes a script to work with. I know it was based on a comic book, but at least write some sort of script to go with this. Jessica Hynes (who we all love here on La Scoop) hasn’t really done anything that good since Spaced, but give her a chance. Give her something to work with. Failing that, let her get in Simon Pegg and they can work together again.
4. Give it more structure. I know that the new BBC Three is down with the kids, all about social networking, and mingling together the net and conventional telly, but fo TV shows to work as entertaining TV shows they need to have structure. It’s all cool to be irreverent and throwing the rules out of the window, but you can still be irreverent AND less of a mess.
5. Make Terry a little bit cooler. Jaime Winstone’s Whitey is brilliant, that’s for sure, but I was a bit disappointed with Terry – he was a bit wishy washy and the joke about him being ore Inspector Cluseau than Bruce Lee wore thin quickly. Make him fierce!
Hopefully, these simple suggestions will be followed because I think at the bottom of all this is something really amazing. Bruce Lee meets Batman? Deffo!
