I actually found myself looking forward to Dancing On Ice this week. You see, it took a few weeks, but it finally broke me. I tell you what I’m not that bothered about though, Torvill & Dean’s opening routine. I don’t know if it’s because they make it look so easy, but it just doesn’t thrill me. (I do accept that, as with so many things, I’m probably in the minority on this one.)
Zaraah Abrahams was out first looking wobbly and petrified throughout and I felt tense watching her. It was a shame because the routine would have been great if she’d done it with confidence. She apparently hadn’t been at all keen on doing this week’s required element – an unaccompanied jump – so she didn’t do it. They said that she did it, but I didn’t actually see her skates leave the ice. Judge Jason Gardiner got booed for saying he didn’t see it, but even in slow motion it wasn’t identifiable as a jump.
Surprisingly, Greg Rusedski likes to jump. I wouldn’t have thought he was up to it, unbalanced as he seems on the ice. Last week Jason said he’d quit if Greg makes it to the final and you have to wonder if the audience will keep him in just to see if that happens. I hope not, because he’s just not good enough. Showing off, he chose to do seven jumps and he fell on the last one. Again, the routine would have been much more enjoyable had it been performed by someone I was confident would stay on their feet. Even so, it was Greg and Kristina’s highest score so far.
I love to watch Gareth Gates, but even he looked a bit nervy this week. They skipped a lift – it looked like he couldn’t get in position and then they skated on without doing it – but his jumps were good and the rest was entertaining. I’d still like him to get his head up and perform a bit more though.
In training, Linda Lusardi managed to sprain her partner, Daniel’s, wrist and nearly slice his ear off with her blade. Their programme wasn’t much better. I don’t know what was up with them all this week. They made a right mess of one of the lifts. Linda does look more confident, but again the skating made me nervous. Also there was kind of a Hillbilly thing with braces at the beginning, which I just thought was unacceptably cheesy. Yes, even for me.
Honestly, I’d rather watch Chris Fountain and his partner, Frankie, than Torvill and Dean. I’m just transfixed every week. He’s the first celebrity ever to land an axel and they scored 27: 5.5 from four of the judges and 5.0 from Robin. But the thing I loved the most about it is how excited Frankie was that Chris landed the jump – she could barely finish the routine, she was so thrilled. Just gorgeous. Also – and I know it’s not about Frankie – but she did the most beautiful spin that gave me goosebumps.
There was a big row last weekend after Judge Nicky Slater said Suzanne Shaw did too much lifting and not enough Dancing On Ice. So, of course, this week they gave her TONS of dancing to do. Maybe a happy medium would have been better? Well, no. Because it was FABULOUS! Every bit of it was wonderful plus she looked the most relaxed so far and it really made me warm to her. Great skating, dancing, lifts and spins. Brilliant. And at first they scored the same as Chris: four 5.5s and a 5.0, this time from Ruthie. Except that Ruthie had actually pushed 5.5 too, making it the highest score of the series so far. And how sad am I? When Ruthie said hers was also a 5.5, my eyes filled up.
This week was such an odd one because four of the six were disappointing but the other two were just flabbergastingly brilliant.

Ah, but who to go? It should have been Greg, but thanks to the Jason feud, I didn’t think it would be and assumed it would be Zaraah or Linda and I was right – they were in the bottom two. After the skate-off – in which Zaraah was greatly improved and Linda wasn’t – the judges unanimously saved Zaraah, although they were very regretful about letting Linda go (Karen Barber was in tears). Linda must have a lovely personality because her skating just wasn’t good enough to inspire that kind of emotion.
I never thought I’d say this, but roll on next week!
