garethgates1.jpgI actually found myself looking forward to Dancing On Ice this week. You see, it took a few weeks, but it finally broke me. I tell you what I’m not that bothered about though, Torvill & Dean’s opening routine. I don’t know if it’s because they make it look so easy, but it just doesn’t thrill me. (I do accept that, as with so many things, I’m probably in the minority on this one.)

Zaraah Abrahams was out first looking wobbly and petrified throughout and I felt tense watching her. It was a shame because the routine would have been great if she’d done it with confidence. She apparently hadn’t been at all keen on doing this week’s required element – an unaccompanied jump – so she didn’t do it. They said that she did it, but I didn’t actually see her skates leave the ice. Judge Jason Gardiner got booed for saying he didn’t see it, but even in slow motion it wasn’t identifiable as a jump.

Surprisingly, Greg Rusedski likes to jump. I wouldn’t have thought he was up to it, unbalanced as he seems on the ice. Last week Jason said he’d quit if Greg makes it to the final and you have to wonder if the audience will keep him in just to see if that happens. I hope not, because he’s just not good enough. Showing off, he chose to do seven jumps and he fell on the last one. Again, the routine would have been much more enjoyable had it been performed by someone I was confident would stay on their feet. Even so, it was Greg and Kristina’s highest score so far.

I love to watch Gareth Gates, but even he looked a bit nervy this week. They skipped a lift – it looked like he couldn’t get in position and then they skated on without doing it – but his jumps were good and the rest was entertaining. I’d still like him to get his head up and perform a bit more though.

In training, Linda Lusardi managed to sprain her partner, Daniel’s, wrist and nearly slice his ear off with her blade. Their programme wasn’t much better. I don’t know what was up with them all this week. They made a right mess of one of the lifts. Linda does look more confident, but again the skating made me nervous. Also there was kind of a Hillbilly thing with braces at the beginning, which I just thought was unacceptably cheesy. Yes, even for me.

Honestly, I’d rather watch Chris Fountain and his partner, Frankie, than Torvill and Dean. I’m just transfixed every week. He’s the first celebrity ever to land an axel and they scored 27: 5.5 from four of the judges and 5.0 from Robin. But the thing I loved the most about it is how excited Frankie was that Chris landed the jump – she could barely finish the routine, she was so thrilled. Just gorgeous. Also – and I know it’s not about Frankie – but she did the most beautiful spin that gave me goosebumps.

There was a big row last weekend after Judge Nicky Slater said Suzanne Shaw did too much lifting and not enough Dancing On Ice. So, of course, this week they gave her TONS of dancing to do. Maybe a happy medium would have been better? Well, no. Because it was FABULOUS! Every bit of it was wonderful plus she looked the most relaxed so far and it really made me warm to her. Great skating, dancing, lifts and spins. Brilliant. And at first they scored the same as Chris: four 5.5s and a 5.0, this time from Ruthie. Except that Ruthie had actually pushed 5.5 too, making it the highest score of the series so far. And how sad am I? When Ruthie said hers was also a 5.5, my eyes filled up.

This week was such an odd one because four of the six were disappointing but the other two were just flabbergastingly brilliant.

Ah, but who to go? It should have been Greg, but thanks to the Jason feud, I didn’t think it would be and assumed it would be Zaraah or Linda and I was right – they were in the bottom two. After the skate-off – in which Zaraah was greatly improved and Linda wasn’t – the judges unanimously saved Zaraah, although they were very regretful about letting Linda go (Karen Barber was in tears). Linda must have a lovely personality because her skating just wasn’t good enough to inspire that kind of emotion.

I never thought I’d say this, but roll on next week!

You are very definately in the minority in relation to your comments about Torvill and Dean. They do make it look easy – because they are the best ice skaters that have ever lived. You’re missing out if you don’t ‘get’ them. You poor thing.

  2. Keris says:

LOL, well thanks for the sympathy. I do appreciate the brilliance of their skating, I just don’t see any emotion. Emotionless art just doesn’t do it for me.

  3. Laura says:

I think you might be foregetting how many people watch Chris and Jayne skate purely for the emotion they convey. Let’s not forget, they are not begging for votes either, they have them already. Just look at the sales for their Dancing on Ice tour. Says it all really.

  4. lauren says:

emotionless and Torvill and Dean do not belong in the same sentence!

  5. Catherine Graham says:

Can i actually ask if you know anything about ice skating?
And secondly, have you ever seen Torvill and Dean live for yourself ,not just watching them on tv?
How you think they are emotionless i personally can’t fathom, maybe you should go and ask the judges that scored them perfect 6′s ?

Failing all this, perhaps you should stick to watching something less creative, maybe coronation street or shameless would be more to your taste

  6. C says:

Oh deary, you really have no idea what you are blabbering on about do you? No emotion, that’s the bit that made me chuckle!
Jayne and Chris are nothing but utterly amazing and you’re comments about them are disgusting.

ALOT of us appreciate Jayne and Chris and have nothing but respect for them and what they have achieved.

  7. K says:

Jayne and Chris emotionless?!? My god woman, are you watching the same programme? Jayne and Chris convey nothing but emotion throughout all of their performances. They have true artistic skill and fluidity that cannot and will not be surpassed by any other. Their emotions are part of their art. Anybody who cannot see this must be blind. We just need Jayne and Chris to be given knighthoods for their tremendous contribution to Britain’s culture! I’m proud to be a Torvill and Dean fan!

  8. Charlie says:

Emotionless – how can anyone say that about Jayne and Chris – the mind boggles, their romantic routines, bring tears to the eyes, try Imagine, or Fields of Gold. For other emotions, try the humourous routines of the past such as Diablo Tango, Hat Trick, etc. They convey so much romantic emotion on the ice that it is to imagine they aren’t a couple in real life.

  9. s says:

How can you call Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean emotionless?
In my opinion, dancing is a form of expressive art-the way people dance conveys their emotions and how they feel. To do that through dance is one thing, to do it on ice and to such a high standard is another.
They go out on the ice every wek and deliver their performance with ease, passion and emotion. They don’t have to, they could just stick to coaching the celebs, but they don’t. They choose to do what they do best, to go out their and perform and the reason they make it look so easy is because they are the undisputed king and queen of ice. It is with their ease that they have thousands of viewers tuning in each week, mesmorised by every step they take and inspiring everyne to have a go themselves.

  10. Donna says:

This is the first time I have ever heard Jayne Torvill and Chrsitopher Dean called emotionless!
Every routine they perform is filled with emotion – romance, humour, passion etc, but they look effortless because Torvill and Dean are two of the greatest ever skaters! Millions of people have watched their routines in the past and millions of people watch their routines now, mesmorised by their performance. They are living legends and inspire so many people – I think the sales of the Tour tickets show their popuarity and you are definetely in the minority.

  11. Emma says:

Good grief – emotionless? I can think of much better words to describe them – amazing.. brilliant.. innovative, maybe? Perhaps you should wipe that attitude and watch them a bit closer. Feel them. They are nothing if not creative and wonderful, and anyone who does not see that knows nothing. Jayne and Chris ARE magic by definition. If their dances are not conveyance of emotion, I don’t know what is.

  12. Kate says:

Emotionless- are you kidding me! Just watch their routines and watch how much they put into them.

Dont tell me thats not the definition of perfection!

  13. Steph says:

You’d rather watch Chris and Frankie than Torvill and Dean? You are in the minority there. Chris and Frankie have no connection and if you don’t see emotion in anything Torvill and Dean do then you’re heartless. No wonder you like Chris and Frankie then.

  14. LL says:

Haha! idiotic comments like that about torvill and dean get you nowhere. i think you need help, you may be a bit nuts.

torvill and dean are nothing but perfection. did you think targeting jayne and chris like that with ridiculous comments wouldn’t get comments disagreeing with you?
you really must be stupid. and what you have said is pathetic, you really are just rude.

  15. Cindy says:

You poor poor deprived person. I can’t imagine not being able to feel emotion, and if you think Torvill and Dean are ‘emotionless’ then you must be made of ice or stone or some other unfeeling inanimate material. Let me tell you now that you are missing out big time. Have you even seen any of their other performances? It shouldn’t matter because they epitomize grace, elegance, beauty, Emotion and Perfection in all of their magical routines. Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean are ice skating Legends in the truest sense of the word, and if you’d rather watch Chris and Frankie… then you are indeed a very small minority and a lost cause.

  16. em says:

you must have been droppped on your head when you were a kid.
if you dont have anything nice to say, refrain from opening your gob and talking absolute crap.

jayne and chris are the best ice dancers on the planet and people like you make me sick.

if you want to say anything horrible about them, do it infront of a torvill and dean fan and i think you’ll find you will lose the battle.

    idiot

  17. Keris says:

Thanks everyone for your concern (did a bulletin go out to the Torvill & Dean fan club?).

Isn’t the world a more interesting place for people having different opinions? And wouldn’t it be nice if we could all respect each others?
