Want to see a curious glimpse of the weird world of Second Life? Then you really ought to tune in for Wonderland (BBC Two, Wednesday, 9.50pm). Some of you may be asking what the hell Second Life is… well lemme tell ya. Second Life is an internet-based virtual world where you can create an altar ego for yourself and become a ‘resident’ of a place filled with weird and wonderful things. Residents can interact with each other via 3D avatars and you can explore, socialize, participate activities and even create and trade items of virtual property. You can even get your (virtual) rocks off. I’ve tried it and couldn’t get into it… but those that do inform me that it’s a life ruiner (much like those who fall head over heels with the Championship Manager game).
So with that, film-maker Fergus O’Brien looks at the lives… and virtual lives… of those who have started relationships in Second Life. We meet Carolyn, who was a down in the dumps American housewife who reinvented herself as a sexy siren and got it on (digitally) with a Brit’ called Eliot. However, Carolyn drifted away from her husband and children and notes that “it was like being reborn.” It’s easy to dismiss this as a show about a buncha freaks who spend too much time on their computers… but if this is the next level of internet social networking, it certainly gives plenty of food for thought.
