The folks at the science department of the BBC are seemingly hooked on torture at the minute. Horizon (BBC Two, Tuesday, 9pm) looked at How To Kill A Human Being last, and next week, the second installment looks at Total Isolation. If we said “grim and grizzly” in the last review, surely this is going to be more of the same. Basically, if you tune in, you’ll see a documentary about the effects of total sensory deprivation on a person. Of course, it’s very difficult to deprive someone of their senses whilst being there to film them… and how do you go about capturing the hellish hallucinations and mental breakdown?
Either way, this programme shows six volunteers enduring total sensory deprivation for 48 hours and test after test is carried out to see how wrong they’ve become. With this being the Beeb, the end result is rather effective. Of course, experiments can only go so far, which is why, for good measure, we get interviews with former hostage Brian Keenan and Paris Carriger, who was imprisoned for 18 years, much of it in solitary confinement. Fascinating telly for those with inquisitive minds.
