Kerry Katona on This Morning - what was all that about?

UPDATE: To watch what happened on this morning’s This Morning (Wednesday 22 October) go here.

Something incredible happened yesterday. Being a freelance type person, sometimes I have to go into an office to work. In this office there are TVs dotted around, and during the morning ITV1 was on. This Morning was doing its normal thing, and it was announced that, after the break, Kerry Katona would be live in the studio discussing her life and her addictions. With that, work stopped for a few minutes and people crowded around the main TV to watch the perennial loser spill her beans. I’ve never seen that before. Not a perennial loser spill their beans, but almost an entire office down tools to watch something on the telly (that’s wrong actually, World Cups have a habit of doing that). I wondered why people were so eager to see what she had to say.

I watched bits of it, and she was appearing alongside a fellow recovering addict called Dan she had met in The Priory, who had set up a website to help other recovering addicts. She was quite honest about stuff, all in all (she said she was not on drugs, used to do coke with her mother-in-law etc). It did make me wonder why people are so interested in her, and of course it’s because she is a recovering addict, she’s never out of the newspapers and seems to lurch from one disaster to the next. People love that kind of shizzle. The best bit though came when Auntie Fern put her straight on a few things – she told her to go home, stay in and questioned why on earth she would let an MTV film crew shadow her every move for one of those spy-on-the-wall docs (they were there recording the interview). Right on Fern! The forums are buzzing and posters are very unforgiving. Check them here and here.

I have just watched Kerry Katona on ITV’s This Morning and was so shocked at the state of her. Why on earth did the people around her let her go on the show in that state. She was obviously either drunk or on drugs. She could barely speak and was almost shouting. It was shocking

  2. beverley heintze says:

I agree with you she was obviously either drunk or on drugs

  3. Kat says:

I cannot believe the state of kerry katona on this morning (22 oct 2008) She was clearly out of her face on drink or drugs!?! Why on earth would the producers of the show allow her to be interviewed in this awful state!!
I cringed all the way through it!
    I found it absolutley SHOCKING!!

  4. Caroline True says:

That’s true, what were her management thinking?? Despite her pleas that her inability to speak without slurring and disassociated demeanor was due to her medication, it was a tragic state to be seen in on national television. Very sad.

  5. Ryan says:

I couldn’t believe the state of her this morning, totally shocked! She was on drugs, there is no question…

When Phil confronted her, she had a bit of an attitude, felt embarassed for her.

  6. sara says:

I felt sorry for her,i heard she’s got bipolar,if she has,her medication can make her look spaced out. she was obviously upset,i wasn’t surprised she reacted like that.
maybe she just wants her life back and dosen’t want her medical condtion to hold her back.

  7. jenny says:

I watched this morning ‘cringing’ and it was very clear that kerry was on some sort of drug, her sppech sounded all nasal and she kept sniffing, her eyeballs were all over the place. She did look normal at the beginning but as soon as she started to speak it was clear her brain was all over the show!!!

  8. Julie says:

this woman needs medical/psycological help and not yes people surrounding her. Her poor children must be seeing this type of behaviour on a daily basis and will grow up to be as fame hungry as she is if she keeps on going the way she is

it was car crash TV watching this today – sad and pathetic – she should never have been allowed on the set in that state

  9. kathleen says:

I rang the show and made a complaint about the kerry interview … this was totally unethical …the producers and presenters should hang their heads in shame … this is not morning entertainment … it would never have happened if richard and judy had still been there …

  10. D says:

I think the person mostly to blame is her husband. He was present and must have realised the backlash she would receive as a result. If she insisted on doing the interview and is only taking prescription drugs it could have been explained clearly before the interview took place. She has bi-polar so it is possible she is taking sedative type meds but she also looked like she could have been lying.

  11. chris says:

It was tragic, the state Kerry Katona was in, they said she had only just arrived and came straight onto the set, so obviously no one had chance to ‘vet’ her beforehand otherwise I’m sure they would not have let her appear? She was obviously off her head on drugs or drink (or both). Her poor children!!

  12. Lizzie says:

i feel awfully sorry for kerry katona,as she may have been affected by her medication and not off her face on drink or drugs, she is trying to get her life back on track and i think that people should let her, instead of making accusations, which may be false!!

  13. james says:

she is a coke head not good kerry sort it out!!

  14. Stephanie says:

How very sad to watch this poor pathetic girl. What on earth are her management and husband thinking of allowing her to be interviewed on T.V
Her speech was slurred, she was doubting herself and asking for guidance from her husband off camera. Come on Max Clifford, stop making money out of this girl and get her better !

  15. Ruth says:

Kerry was perfectly fine as far as i was concerned im on the same medication at the mo and sound exactly the same its NOT DRINK OR DRUGS and with a cold it makes me sound worse. Give her a break people always think the worst.
    Ruth

  16. Michelle says:

Regardless of the reasons for her slurred speach and confused state of mind she should never have been on This Morning at 10.30am. It was uncomfortable watching for the viewers and boy would I love to have been a fly on the wall when Fern and Phil were talking about it later!! I am so angry that we pay to watch —- like this!!

  17. Jo says:

I cannot feel sorry for Kerry – after all she is only fanous now for her car-crash tv existence. I DO feel for her 4 helpless children….someone needs to help them.

With regard to this mornings interview – I felt that Philip and Fern handled her very well and were simply asking what the viewers were speculating about. Her comments about her son crying a lot and her eldest gaughter having to help out a lot would certainly ring alarm bells for me….

I agree that her management and ghusband should not have allowed her to be on TV in tha tstate, but I wonder whether she is her own worst enemy. I did bnot like her defensive and obnoxious attitude she developed whilst being interviewed.

  18. Mary says:

The show was completely unethical to behave as they did this morning. 1. If they thought she was unfit for interview then her slot should have been cancelled 2. If, as I assume they will protest, she arrived so late that it was not possble to assess her state, then they could have desisted from interrogating her on her state (in a patronising and judgemental way)and bring the interview to a close sooner. Viwers could draw their own conclusions, and Kerry is perfectly capable of speaking for herself should she need to account for how she presented. 3. The effects of medication may well account for her appearance, and in any event whose business is it anyway?

  19. cara says:

To be honest it could be affects from her medication, after all she has Bipolar disorder. Re: Kerry Katona; I work with mental ill health and certain medications such as Temazepam, anti psychotics or mood stabaliser tablets can have this affect in the morning also known as “the hangover effect” this can happen some days were other days no affect may occur, so please don’t judge someone as being a “druggie” or “alco” (even if they previously had an addiction problem) she was brave enough to declare to half the population thats shes on medication!. We should encourage her to “get better” by being positive!

  20. cara says:

I have just watched the video again and poor Kerry she is on Chlorpromazine which is an anti-psychotic this can leave her speech slurred lethargy (she was up early to do the interview AND took her medication at 11.30pm!)This (prescribed) drug has lots of side effects, people with mental health problems suffer enough stigma and now with this “interview” getting taken out of context im sure the poor girl wont be as compliant in taking her medication WHICH is keeping her from possibly having another “episode” of depression, feeling suicidal, being psychotic etc… please media folks lay off her and let her have a chance of being well enough to be a mother, wife and feeling valued and human

  21. emma says:

it was tragic to watch kerry this morning i was cringing all the way through!i 2 am on meds for a similar mental ilness and know that when mixed with alcahol they can make u super drowsy and ur speech become slurred, however had this been delt with and explained at the start of the interview we as the viewers could have been more informed and therefore prepared for the spectical we were to witness.who the hell is looking after this woman???? i cannot make up my mind weather i blame the this morning producers or her management team or her pathetic excuse for a husband who for the mental and emotional state of his wife he should be looking out for her.its disgusting how no one seems to be looking after this woman when she clearly cant look out for herself.i didnt expect a lot from max clifford or that pathetic excuse for a husband but THIS MORNING come on!!

  22. Tracy says:

I have to ask will the public ever give this woman a break. This girl has been tru so much over the last few yrs that i think any other person would have not been able to deal with on their own and that she was after finishing Brian, i feel since then she has settle for less than she is worth and everyone has took what they wanted from her and picking at her when all she needed most was support. It is clear something is not right and to be in the public eye as much as she is i am sure to get the right help she needs is impossible considering no one lets the woman move with out it being on the front page of some newspaper. Kerry i hope you see this and know not everyone is out to get you alot of people feel for you after all the bad press you’ve had over the yrs. I feel you do need help to sort out issues that u have not gotten over but i feel you should be allowed to do that in your own privacy…

  23. Naomhín says:

Kerry Katona is a disaster – I only watched to see if she was beginning to sort herself out, and literally seconds into the interview realised the girl was completely off her head on something. Surely the bubble she is living in will have to burst now – her poor kids. Her life is a dramarama….the english Britney!

  24. Jayne says:

I am shocked that Kerry was subjected to this barrage of questions from Phil and Fern.
It was a disgrace they could see that she obviously not well, yet they continued and now today i noticed that Fern was very apologetic….. trying to cover herself i fear.

Horse bolted and door shut comes to mind.

OK…. whilst i do not agree with everything that Kerry has done for God sake give the girl a chance.

  25. FiFiW says:

Well call me speculative if you like but I bet you lots of money she was off her face on coke or alcohol or most likely both. Dr Hilary on GMTV discussed it this morning and said no way would her medication make her like that. In fact we know its not her medication don’t we because she’s already proved it to us herself when she let us into her world recently in her documentary on MTV when she was pregnant and still taking her medication – and er not slurring!!
Anyone who goes on live TV in that kind of state will obviously and quite rightly attract this kind of speculation. Being kind to her and saying yes love its your medication is not going to do her any favours whatsoever the girl needs help! If medication like that gets someone into that state other questions need to be raised such as – should she be driving, is she fit to look after her children etc etc.
She needs help big time and if Social Services are reading this she also needs investigating. Oh and a divorce from her ‘allegedly’ drug dealer (cocaine I believe) vile husband!

  26. Louise says:

Oh please. She chooses to parade herself in front of the world. Always on TV and in magazines. She’ll do anything to be in the public eye. We’ve all been through bad times. I’ve had some horrendous things happen over the last few years but you get on with it. You tell the people closest to you – not millions of people. I’ve had depression but beaten it – not through drink and drugs. I also have children to look after. She should keep herself to herself and get herself sorted. I read an interview with her today, swearing constantly and saying how drunk she was. She’s a disgrace and certainly should not be the face of Iceland or anything else for that matter.

  27. Dara Flanagan says:

Omg people be nice for goodness sake

    http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/7685773.stm

i believe that she was taking prescription drugs. ive never been a huge fan of kerry, i like her but i dont love her. but sheesh she didnt do anything rong. give her anothe chance. sheesh

  28. Christina says:

Sorry but from what I saw yesterday Fern and Philip were just as shocked as the viewers! I think they handled the interview well, and I also believe that if in fact Kerry’s medication is causing her to slur her words she should get it changed!

  29. kelly traverse says:

I agree with a bit of everything that has already been said above. Her arriving late at ITV is no excuse and the state she was in should definitely have been spotted by, at the very least, make up department (who it was stated had been the only ones to see her before she was on air).
It certainly appears that she was drunk or on drugs of some kind, but at the same time I do not think it is fair to comment, as she could well be genuine.
I think her comments about the children were normal and nothing out of the ordinary (she is honest after all and babies do cry and little girls do like to help mum) BUT rather worrying, combined with the state of her health. For all we know she may have insisted on doing the interview after being advised by Mark/Management not to go ahead, but at the same time she should have explained her condition beforehand instead of denying it once questionned.
Either way the only people to blame is herself and her husband. She is an adult with four children and needs to take responsibility. He is an ex drug dealer so that, in my mind, says it all.
Is he preying on her weak and emotional state, to claw back her money that he has blown(?)
Looking in as outsiders, I’m sure we can all see that Kerry was fine until her ex husband had an affair, then suddenly old insecurities and addictions come bouncing back, as they understandably would. At a time when she should have been concentrating on her two children and getting herself well, along comes Mark Croft and the downhill spiral begins.
I do feel sorry for her and the children and, despite my comments, it really is none of our business. Unfortunately they made it our business by appearing on tv.
My advice: Take yourself away from the cameras, take a stand in your relationship and put your children first.
Money and fame is nothing compared to your health and sanity.

  30. Annmarie says:

Oh please, can we not give this girl a break. She is on medication and for all you no hopers who are quick to judge her, this medication CAN and DOES have the effect on people that we have all witnessed with kerry yesterday. I really hope the media gives her a break on this one. I think she’s been dealt enough blows, so give her a break on this one. We’re all only human after all. Fortunately though, we don’t all suffer from Bipolar like that poor girl does.

  31. Annmarie says:

I’m happy to give her the benefit of the doubt. These are the normal side effects for the medication she is taking for her bipolar (she has bipolar – remember (for all you nasty sods that can’t help but condemn her) So for your information here are the NORMAL SIDE EFFECTS

Constipation; decreased sweating; dizziness; drowsiness; dryness of mouth; nasal congestion

I think we can pretty much confirm that the last 3 side effects for this drug is exactly how Kerry was behaving on This Morning yesterday. So all you people who are condemning her, stick that in your pipe and smoke it

  32. Gemma says:

the first persons name that came to my head when i watched this morning with kerry was ‘daniella westbrook’ i think she sounded just like her and forgive me if im wrong but kerrys nose looks a little like its caving in!!!

  33. Kathryn says:

She should have her kids taken away

  34. Victoria says:

I never watch This Morning, but had a day off so had it on in the background, I was shocked and confused when I saw the Kerry interview. Someone on this morning must have noticed she was under the influence of something, and as for her husband, why would he let her go ahead and do that he must have been aware of the state she was in? I hope this young girl gets clean and kicks him into touch, maybe watching back the interview will be the wake up call she needs.

I also thought Phil and Fern, who work brilliantly together, handled the situation very well,, but shame on the producers of This Morning to allow the interview

  35. I feel sorry for the women as i feel she has just got caught up in the big bad world of wrong company and the demons of drugs.
I think we should all say a prayer that she sees sence not only for her own sake but for her kids. Her kids need her.
We need to stop judgeing people, as we never know whats going to come to our own door.
I wish her all the best and i hope she is able to pull her self together.
    good luck kerry xxx

  36. Bev Wood says:

I think the fact that Kerry Katona was allowed to paricipate in that interview, whatever the reasons for her appearance is a disgrace, & now we have this ridiculous mess over Russel Brand & Jonathon Ross which quite frankly no one gives a damn about(caused by a little tarts own actions) & all hell is let loose, why arent the people who allowed a visibly drugged Kerry Katona onto live tv being done for exploitation? (the girl has a very serious mental health illness) Im very annoyed over the ridicule she has recieved which can only go on to make someone who is poorly in a much worse state. PRIORITISE people!! I myself have been on medication over the years making me groggy & feel spaced out & I am not and never have been a recovering addict.

  37. Sue says:

Kerry Katona is like that song that Joe Pascali used to sing….I know a song that gets on your nerves….and oh my god does’nt she just!
She has no self respect and boy does she need the money if she will do anything just to get something. Go away Katona and get on with your life and stop boring everyone.

  38. mel holden says:

Kerry Katona is and will always be a “Has Been”. As for her drug taking and packing it up? Are there green men on the moon?
