TV Scoop's Television Top 50 2007: Number 1: Life On Mars (BBC One)

lom_top50_no1.jpgAww, did you wonder where it had gone? How could you ever have doubted that the massed mentalists of TV Scoop would vote anything other than the incredible Life On Mars as our number 1 top telly turn-on for 2007? Now before you go all pedantic on us, this is of course Series 2 we're talking about. The second and (it still pains us to say) final series of this ground-breaking televisual icon. Where Series 1 reached number 6 in our charts for 2006, its follow-up and finale was so much more fulfilling as it delivered everything we'd come to love in the first series, plus a healthy dollop of extra goodies, that we could do no other than award it the top slot for 2007.

Life On Mars really did break the mould of television sci-fi drama. Combining genres is not generally accepted as a recipe for success, but in the case of LOM it could not have been done to greater effect, as its winning of three BAFTAs gives testimony. The casting was sublime, the 1970s sets and locations perfect (although as has been reported recently, they may not look as good if you watch reruns on HDTV), the outrageously non-PC banter was simultaneously outrageous and delicious, the weekly sub-plots where the programme pretended to be a cop show were diverting and the main plot?

Oh, the main plot! Kept us all guessing right to the very last episode, which reached new highs even higher than the highs we'd come to expect from this series.

So having had almost nine months to think about it, have your thoughts gestated? Are they ready to be born? What was your verdict on Sam's Last Leap? Was it a fitting end to the show? What did it mean? Will you be buying the DVD box set?

And even more importantly perhaps, will you be watching the spin-off Ashes to Ashes, which will be on our screens next year. Of course you will. We can't wait, here, and we're pretty sure you can't wait either. That's why we shared the preview pictures with you recently, and why we'll be on the case with other news as it breaks between now and February. And who knows? Maybe this time next year we'll be writing the retrospective on a show whose name is spookily fitting as it has risen phoenix-like from the ashes of LOM, and which may itself be sitting a-top our top 50 for 2008.

And if you're looking for that elusive perfect Christmas present from your Life-on-Mars-loving partner, family member or friend, look no further than the Life On Mars Official Companion Volume 2, as mentioned in Ian Wylie's fabulous last word on the show.

For once I agree with a magazine or online end-of-year list. What a programme, what a series... it's already much missed. Oh, and a Gene Hunt interview! You are spoiling us!

One last YAY from me for Life On Mars, my personal favourite of the year too :)
