Just a short review today, as I fear I may have been Booshing you all out a little recently, and in any case, I don’t feel that this was an episode that deserves much eulogising over. The Strange Tale of The Crack Fox is one of those episodes that I can imagine the Boosh themselves are very happy with; I think there may have been fairytale allusions throughout (cape, prince, woodland animals etc), and other such subtleties in the script that require repeated viewing. But an episode still needs to have an immediate impact, and I’m not sure this one did.
There were some nice moments, certainly. I quite liked the tax-deductable tramp, the Plan Pony (and Howard’s reaction to it) was great, and Julian Barratt was unrecognisable as the Fox. But there were too many odd and frankly rubbish moments too: the Shamans’ obsession with drugs seemed unnecessary and random, and Naboo and Bollo’s song was pretty unlistenable.
Just like Eels, this, quite clearly, was a further step by the Boosh away from the first series which could basically be classed as a children’s show into darker territory. It’s something, I think, that they’re still learning to write properly, and sometimes they don’t get the tone quite right. Next week we’re on safer ground, I feel – it’s Howard’s birthday, and despite his protestations, Vince is determined to put on a massive bash for him.
