Movie of the Week: A Knight's Tale

knights_tale.jpgSometimes it's good to be serious, others it's good to have fun, and if you're in the mood for fun there's a lot to be said for this gem, which sets medieval times alight to a soundtrack featuring Queen. What story there is, as you might guess from the title, revolves around knights and their tournaments, but the plot comes a poor second to the antics of the main characters, the humour mixed with humanity, the puns with the pathos and the jousting with the jocularity.

Heath Ledger stars as the knight with the tale, Paul Bettany never accepts that he is not the star while he's playing Chaucer, and since every knight needs at least one squire, Mark Addy and Alan Tudyk prove that they can squire with the best of them. A great romp for a Sunday night, and with only one more week at work before the Christmas break, it won't even feel like a proper Sunday.

A broad take on "The Canterbury Tales," the story centres on William (Ledger), a young squire who longs for a chance to put his gift for jousting to good use.

As luck would have it, his chance comes along sooner than he expects when his master dies suddenly, allowing William to adopt the identity of "Sir Ulrich von Lichtenstein of Gelderland" and set off with his friends Roland and Wat in search of tournaments in which to prove his prowess.

On the road they meet an unknown writer, Geoffrey Chaucer, whom William convinces to forge papers for him so that he may pass himself off as a knight. Thus the doors to the country's knightly competitions are opened and William sets about building a reputation for himself. Naturally, along the way, he makes an enemy of the most dangerous knight in the world and falls in love with the noble lady who appears to be tantalisingly out of his league.
