I was still in shock from last night’s amazing row between Len and Brendan, so I was looking forward to seeing how the dancer would react post-argument. Sod the voting, I wanted to see how it had calmed down or how the tension between them was simmering. Looking back at last night’s judge-dancer spatette, Brendan seems to be the sort of character that does need to be taken down a peg or two from time to time. He’s an incredible dancer, but sometimes he acts like a kid. And last night it was down to Headmaster Goodman to administer some harsh words. These words may just bring out the best in him.

Aside from all that, we had some results to digest. I really feared for John, maybe Kenny, and even Kelly and Brendan after last night’s show. Before I blather on about what happened, you can, of course, read past posts on SCD here.

We had our normal recap at the top of the show. Matt and Flavia still looked ace, Alesha and Matthew will surely win this competition hands-down if they don’t manage to bugger things up spectacularly, and I think Gethin also has a good chance to get to the final. And wadda ya know? Kenny finished above Kelly Brook in the scoring table, which was a fine achievement indeed.

But it was back to the spat. We saw Len jabbing his finger and shouting from last night’s show, Brendan’s temples bulging and Kelly standing there, rather incredulously. In an after-show VT, Arlene explained that Kelly and Brendan were one of the favourites to go all the way, so it was so disappointing that they had fallen so flat. Brendan’s response to Len backstage? “I will slap you down!” Fighting talk indeed.

So, after a dreamy Charleston and Quickstep from a dancing troupe – as well as Anton and Lilia – a performance by the Sugababes and a group Dirty Dancing dance (I really hate Dirty Dancing!!!), it was time for the announcements.

First couple to be saved was Kenny and Ola. I thought he may be in a spot of bother, but this man definitely has the public onside. No surprises next – Alesha and Matthew, Matt and Flavia, Gethin and Camilla and Letitia and Darren were all saved and will dance again next week.

In the dance-off were John and Nicole and Kelly and Brendan. John’s advice from the judges was to not look at the floor – a habit that blighted his dance last night. And he came out fighting. His head was up, but when he wasn’t shaking his legendary hips, I have to say he looked a bit cumbersome and static. It’s obvious he’s a nice guy, has got terrific hips and was a blinding football player once, but if Kelly and Brendan danced even half-cock they would be through.

And they danced pretty well. Kelly looked nervous early doors, but Brendan was a whirlwind. In some ways he carried the whole thing and it was no surprise to see that all the judges unanimously agreed to save Kelly and Brendan. Could this be the wake-up they need.

So farewell John Barnes. You can go back to rubbish sports presenting if you want, but we will never forget you and your funky hips.

Next week, the couple will have to dance two dances each – a ballroom and a Latin. It’s gonna get tight.
