TV Review: Long Way Down, BBC Two, Sunday, 9pm

ewan_charley2.jpgIf I was disappointed by Long Way Down last week, the fourth and most recent episode of the series totally made up for it. Yes, Long Way Down, we are totally BFF again. This episode not only featured some Man Drama, but a few crashes, a family of elephants, one dead goat, and the ghastly description of how one Kenyan tribe circumcises their boys. Really, what more could you possible ask for?

This week, the opening scene was of a unshaven Ewan McGregor looking drearily into his diary camera, dirt caked onto his cheeks like Mystic Tan on Lindsay Lohan, sucking on a mangled lollipop whilst complaining that he’s sick of being known as “the guy who falls of his bike all the time”. However, he says he’s open to the criticism from the “off road guys” as he says it’s cool if you want to go up and tell him that he falls off his bike a lot, as long as you’re okay with him telling you to “fuck off”.

The tension has been mounting between the Road Team, and it all finally came to a head when the team had three days off in Addis Abba. Sadly, we didn’t get to see all of the Man Drama and crocodile tears, just the video diaries of Ewan and Charley looking mournfully into the camera talking about how they’ve been “out of sorts” and have different “needs and desires from the trip itself”. Perhaps the most amazing thing was that after the boys got pissy with one another, they all sat down to explain their feelings and tell eachother “honestly” what they each want from the trip. I was incredibly impressed as most people traveling together never get that far. They would just end up just telling eachother to ‘eff off and check in to different hotels.

The pressure to reach certain check points and ferries seems to have lulled, and you can see the team enjoying themselves so much more. They had the amazing opportunity to visit a Kenyan tribe, and to camp on their land. From holding hands with the many children, and oogling over the women’s amazing jewelry, it was incredible to watch how excited the tribes people were to see a photograph of themselves on a digital camera for the first time. Watching how Charley and Ewan interact with the children and the Kenyan people, you get the distinct impression that while some stars like Sienna Miller want to travel to Africa and take photo diary with Marie Claire photographers, these two actually care about the people their meeting. At one point, Ewan even said, “I want to feel the spirit of Africa.” Do you think Sienna ever said that? Nooo. I bet it was more like, “I am sooo going to a spa after this.”

Now…while this episode was moving and a lot more entertaining than the last one – it was also the most graphic. At one point, you see a happy little goat join the boys camp, and the next thing you know, you see it’s throat slit and it being ripped apart for their evening meal. Do I suddenly feel the urge to become a vegetarian, yes. I also have decided that I if I were unsure if I would circumcise my (hypothetical) son before, I am certainly against it now. The Kenyan fixer/translator explained that the tribe they were staying at would be having their circumcision ceremony in the next month, and described bit by bit how they “operate” on the boys. The worst part? If they boys flinch during the procedure, it will forever shame their family. The chief even *joked* that if his son twitched, he would “kill him”. Mind you, they don’t use local anesthesia. Awkward.

The episode came to an end with the Road Team getting their 4×4 vehicles stuck in the mud, and wondering if they’ll have to turn around go a different route, which would add an extra 100 miles to their journey. Oh deary me.

Best line from the episode:
“Long Way Down: watch as Ewan McGregor bitches all the way to Cape Town!”

Yes I agree – EM has lost the plot, CB is being editied to death and the idea that thay need to travel all over the place with the support 4x4s just ruins the whole “get away from it” ethos – they have lost the plot and certainly the spirit

I did not enjoy the Long Way Down at all, it was nothing compared to the Long Way Round. The newest offering should be renamed ‘The Ewan McGregor Show’. I couldn’t believe Ewan’s selfishness – in not only hogging the camera for the most part, but for making Charley rush his journey so that Ewan could meet up with his wife. I thought that was disgusting – the whole trip was supposed to be about two mates travelling across Africa, not to ruin the journey to meet up with an uninteresting dappy woman who couldn’t even ride a bike. Why did they ruin it for Charley? I think from that point onwards Charley should have told them to f off and carried on the documentary on his own – his commentary is far more interesting, he is a far better biker and a genuine person, but he is constantly pushed aside to make way for Ewan. I don’t think they should do another one – I haven’t got the patience to watch Ewan messing it all up again. I think Charley should find a new partner or have his own show – would make for much more enjoyable viewing!
