flight2.jpgAfter being completely taken with Jermaine and Bret during the live show broadcast as a little taster, I found the opening episode of the series good... but not great. Mof reviewed the second episode, and, like me, found things to enjoy, but also found it rather hard to get his head around the down-beatness of it all.

Actually, I really liked the second episode, and have really grown into the series as a whole. And how glad I am! There just isn't enough bizarre, New Zealand musical comedy out there, is there...?

It seems that each week brings a little minor crisis occur in the relationship between our heroes Jermaine and Bret. Last week it was the fact that Bret was quickly climbing the corporate ladder of the 'sign-holding' business, leaving the band behind, and this week he left Jermaine to fend for himself during a mugging. Sure, Jermaine ended up befriending one of the muggers (who was also abandoned by his partner when the fuzz turned up), but that's not the point. After a few days of assuming Jermaine was dead (and discussing how much he said the word "what?") Bret, Murray-the-manager and Dave found him languishing in a police cell. And he wasn't happy.

The songs this week were fabulous. Jermaine and Bret tried to rap their way out of the robbery, allowing them to use their rap names: Rhymenocerous and Hiphopopotomous. It was a hilarious Jurassic 5-esque spoof, but easily matched by the What's Going On-style ballad which bemoaned the fact that, among other problems, there's a guy lying about in the street with "knives and forks sticking out of his leg (ooh, could somebody please remove these cutleries from my knees)". Sounds better with the tune, I'd imagine...

Jermaine and Bret are brilliant, but you have to admit that Murray gets a lot of the best lines, and they're certainly not wasted by his real-life alter-ego Rhys Darby. He may be the most inept band manager ever to have existed, but you can't help liking the guy.

Yes, The Flight Of The Conchords is certainly low-key, but it's also one of the best things on TV at the moment - funny, sweet and truly unique. And their accents *are* hilarious.

I love this and can't wait to get my hands on the DVD later this month so I can book a sitting and watch the whole series on one go.
