Ah. Heroes (BBC Two, Wednesday, 9pm). You old devil you. You’ve got more cliffhangers than Beachy Head. For those of you who don’t have digital telly and the extra channels, you’d better not read this as I watched two episodes last night, and I can’t remember which bits happened in which programme. If you haven’t seen the next episode (to be shown on BBC Two) then you’re in for a treat. That’s all I’m telling you. Now, be off with you as I’m probably going to give away quite a few spoilers.
Heroes, despite all the hype, is living up to the promises. I can’t quite work out why, but it has. It’s got thrills, spills, intrigue, great plot twists, loveable characters and the intense humming of pure evil. Quite simply, it’s the best American drama I’ve seen in a long time. So what happened and what did I think of it? Well, read over as I don’t want to mention anything in here for fear of ruining next weeks episode…
As ever, Heroes jumped around from story to story with great aplomb last evening. However, the tangled web of stories unraveled a little to see our heroes (and villains) in touching distance of each other. Now, I know we’ve already seen a few of them meeting up, but this show doesn’t run from A to B does it? Nope. It’s more like C to E to A to D and then back to B. It’s all very very clever. Despite the tricksiness, the show never really feels laboured. The jumping of time and open ended questions seem to knit together very well, leaving this writer wanting to know more.
So what do we know? Well, the biggest gasp in my house was the discovery that Claire’s real pappy is none other than Nathan Petrelli. Yup, a super hero who got off with someone with special powers and BANG! A baby with super human powers was born. Y’see, Claire’s maw can ignite her own hands (“some family huh?”) which has dragged the net in even closer. As these stories combined, we so other characters drawing nearer.
Hiro, Niki and Matt all became entwined in the same story, although Hiro was locked up in a little room. That didn’t stop the action though… hell no. I got what I’d been hoping for. Some fighting between some super people! Niki… or rather, her evil twin/reflection thing, Jessica, went into battle with nice guy failed cop, Matt. His mind reading skills didn’t really come to bear real fruit, but hearing thoughts through walls and hearing the two voices of Niki left a gaping hole in the story dying to be filled. Of course, Jessica’s superhuman strength made the biggest mark, chucking poor ol’ Matt out of a window like a rag-doll.
Oh, and the reason they were fighting? Matt was to act as security for a nasty thieving type who was promptly snapped in half by super strong Jessica. Matt, ‘hearing’ that he was ‘useless’ by a policeman, kept a stash of looted diamonds (with a heavy heart it has to be said) whilst Jessica, mean and evil, battered the baddie. So just who is the super villain in all of this? This is yet to be cleared up.
Sylar meanwhile continues to be the most evil thing on TV this side of Jeremy Kyle. The acting for this role is nothing short of excellent. There is an unquantifiable and intense evil that surrounds the character and, if you hadn’t guessed, I’ve completely bought into it. That’s saying something. I’ve also bought into the Hiro character too, who continued to be incredibly nice and charming. That said, I’m really looking forward to him getting a bit meaner. He’ll be pushed and pushed and then… well… he’ll become super duper.
Chris Eccleston’s role played a major part of last night’s shows. Peter Petrelli, a bomb literally waiting to go off, was teased and taunted by Eccleston’s Claude. Claude tells him he must learn to hold onto his abilities when the person he absorbed it from isn’t around. Of course, testing this, he pushes Nathan off a building and gets him all kinds of messed up. It was great. In fact, Eccleston’s face was a picture when Petrelli yelled “YOU SON OF A BITCH! YOU PUSHED ME OFF A BUILDING!”.
Of course, at the centre of all these goings on is HRG. This mysterious and calculating character has yet to truly reveal himself… and when he does… well… I might just faint with excitement. The only drawback with this show is that it is something you have to regularly watch to understand. It’s a shame because it feels like it won’t win any new fans over as, anyone jumping in now will wonder what the fig is going on. I’ve missed a couple and certain segments puzzle me slightly. Still, as is par for the course with a show like this, it’ll all reveal itself soon enough… only to throw another yorker at you. I’m enjoying this.
