TV Review – Charlie Brooker’s Screen Wipe, BBC Four, Tuesday, 10pm

SirBrooker.jpegCharlie Brooker’s Screen Wipe (BBC Four, Tuesday, 10pm) is fast becoming my favourite programme on the telly… which is not bad for a glorified clip show with shouting in-between. The second series of this wonderful show has only just started (we’re on the second one) and already, it is proving to be superior to the first. I think this is for a couple of reasons. Firstly, it’s easier to watch Brooker as he’s obviously loosened up in front of the camera and secondly, I’m used to seeing him in front of a camera. For years I’ve read his Guardian columns and TV Go Home, and he didn’t end up looking like the man I had imagined all that time.

With this new found ease comes a new found fury. Brooker, instead of pointing out the horrendous flaws in 90% of TV shows has now turned the whole thing on its head and now focusing the heat seeking bile on TV as a whole… as an industry… as the soulless moral vacuum that it really is… and it’s great.

Charlie Brooker is obviously keen to cause as much bother as possible. Last night, he could be seen attacking the very people who pay his wages, referring to some people at the BBC as “gonks” because they’ve managed to ruin the end credits of every programme because, according to their pie charts, graphs and other completely pointless business tools, people start flicking when a show is over.

Brooker likened this, with a sketch, to someone reading a book. As you finish a book, it’s nice to be able to reflect and soak it all up. However, if books were like TV, as soon as you’d read the last page, you’d have someone hopping around shouting “READ THIS OTHER BOOK! AND WHEN YOU’VE FINISHED THAT, READ THESE OTHER ONES AS WELL!” I’d never thought of this… and again, he’s completely right. Now, on the Beeb, when a show closes, you are inundated with requests to stay and watch these other programmes they’ve got on. It’s fair to say that I’ve gone from singing along with theme tunes to completely tuning out. It seems that the suits have managed to do the exact opposite thing of what they were trying to achieve. Chumps.

It’s not just broadcasters and TV shows that get Brooker going. Hell no. Think about it. What spoils your TV viewing like nothing else? Advertisements. So, off Brooker went with a brick smashing the teeth out of all the “cocks” on commercials at the moment. You know the advert “Everyone knows a bloke like Mickey….”? Well Brooker got onto the case shouting “Yeah! Everyone refers to him as that smug **** down the road!” Brooker also had the time to give a dieting advert a royal kicking which provided me with my biggest TV laugh of the month. When the dieting ad’ chirruped “Who doesn’t feel better after a diet?” Brooker spat “Bobby Sands?”. Cruel, clever and hilarious. In fact… that last sentence is pretty much the reason I love Screen Wipe. Watch it. Learn. Laugh. [Mof Gimmers]
