Terry Wogan might be Irish (okay, he is there’s no maybe about it), but here in Blighty he has become that most ghastly of phrases: ‘a national treasure.’ He is beloved by many, be it for his morning radio 2 show, his sarcastic Eurovision commentary or his former talk show glory. With his lilting accent, gentle humour and easy warmth he’s become a firm favourite with the masses over the years, be they young or old. He’s….oh, you get the picture: we love Terry. And that’s why the BBC veteran’s most recent antics have caused quite a stir.

No, he hasn’t been dangling children over a balcony or snorting cocaine off the head of a bald dwarf, but he has (horror of horrors) worn a pair of too-tight trousers. Y’see, charming though he is, Terry isn’t really considered a sexy-stud by most of us and so when viewers of his programme Points of View tuned in on Sunday, they were surprised to see Sir Terry sitting uncomfortably in a pair of moleskin trousers that left little to the imagination. Oh, the horror! It’d be like catching your granddad in his pants or seeing a department store Santa Claus with a hard-on. It sexualizes what we have long considered as sexually active as a Ken doll. And since the unwelcome peak into the size and shape of Terry’s package – viewers are inevitably complaining.

The BBC’s online message boards have received numerous aggrieved comments, with one poor tortured soul complaining: “I have just watched Points of View with my daughter and my husband. When the camera panned out on Terry Wogan, I didn’t know where to look. Both my daughter and I (who are in no way prudish) were totally embarrassed to see Terry with very revealing trousers on. I’m sure we can’t have been the only ones to notice.”

Fans have been quick to defend the under-fire 69-year-old, claiming the blame should lie elsewhere: “I think the cameraman was taking the proverbial. Terry isn’t usually framed that way. He probably thought it was the usual waist-up shot and wasn’t giving a thought to the lunchbox.” Another added: “Can’t the man have a mid-life crisis in peace? In the animal kingdom such displays often attract a willing mate.”

Rumours are suggesting that the incident might be featured on the show itself, with Points of View covering its own wardrobe malfunction or that it might turn up on Terry’s show Auntie’s Bloomers. Sir Terry is remaining defiant, saying: “Everybody’s an expert – you can’t appear on television without a crowd of idiots telling you look like something the cat dragged in.” Good for you Tel.
