What To Watch This Weekend

identident.jpgThe weather is indifferent and going out to the pub will only serve to make your feel ashamed to be a part of the human race. Cheap alcopops and horrific music will blare to the point of stripping the skin off your ears. That may not be your weekend, but it’s what I’m expecting from my night out. So, whilst you’re gleefully tucking into some digestives and curled up on the couch, spare a thought for me. Here’s what I’d be watching this weekend if I had stayed in…

Friday – My Name Is Earl, Channel 4, 10.35pm

Quite simply, My Name Is Earl is still the best comedy on TV. It’s been on for ages, been shunted around the schedule by the hapless twits at Channel 4, and it still manages to come up trumps with each episode. The cast are great, the script is even better. Could this be one of the finest comedy programmes ever shown? I think so. Tune in tonight and laugh your belly open.

Saturday – Room 101, BBC1, 10pm

Paul Merton interviews Stephen Fry about all the things that drive him mad. What more could you want?

Sunday – Jonathan Ross in Search of Steve Ditko, BBC4, 9pm

Anna has already done a fine article on this, so I’ll say no more. Click here to read it. In fact, all I’ll add is that it is this kind of show that makes the BBC’s digital channels so very rewarding. This is followed by the fabulous Comics Britannia.

One To Avoid – The IT Crowd, Channel 4, Friday, 10pm

I recently asked Graham Linehan for an interview and he told me to go away (in more fruity language than that you understand) which is a shame as I like everything he’s ever made… except this. I’m also enjoying his writing partner’s (Arthur Mathews) book called Well Remembered Days (in fact it’s the funniest book I’ve ever read bar none). I’d love to retaliate but I simply can’t find it in myself. Simply, I so dearly wanted The IT Crowd to be great… and it isn’t.
