TV Review – Road Wars, Sky Three, Wednesday, 10.30pm

weird_car_wreck.jpgLike most blokes, I was watching the football last night so my regular viewing was shunted off into the weird twilight zone that only exists after there has been some kind of live event on the box. Last night was no exception. I ended up watching Road Wars (Sky Three, Wednesday, 10.30pm) watching the world’s fools razz cars around with ver cops in hot pursuit.

Now, last night wasn’t the first time I’ve watched this show. As some of you may know, I often gravitate to this kind of show in the vain hope of some real action. I almost view these like b-movies… and seeing as no broadcaster has got the balls to show some real trashy horror (apart from some Hammer Horror on ITV at daft o’clock) I have to settle on backward villains being chased by the boys in blue (no, not the Cannon and Ball film).

Watching Road Wars is different to Street Wars (of which I shamefully love) as it focuses on, well, car chases. Instead of seeing people knocking clumps out of each other, we get thrills and spills on the road with drunken buffoons, gun fights, sparks, flames and… well… popped tyres. Of course, we get to hear coppers talking to each other (generally telling people off or shouting “shit!” when something extraordinary happens).

Last night, I felt proud of the world’s criminals. Why? Well, some of them have cinematic brains. Some of them are so considerate that, when crashing their cars, they do it with all the style and grace of a Hollywood film. One crim’ flew sideways across a road, sparks flying, only to crash into a tree at some silly speed. So fast was the crash that it actually knocked the tree over and it went through the roof of the car. The producers of Road Wars replayed the incident about 20 times… and not once did it become boring. Brava!

Another lot who had presumably pinched a car (who really cares?) screwed the sam hell outta their wheels only for the police to take chase and ram into the side. This smashed all the windows and nearly upended the motor, leaving the scallies inside leaping out and legging it. Thrilling stuff.

Is there any social commentary in this show? Does it tell us all what a good job the police do all over the world? Hell no. It shows us nothing but adrenaline. You like cop flicks? You like the car chase scenes the best? Well, that’s what this show is. A load of cars going dead fast and crashing with occasional gun-fire. It’s simple. It’s stupid. It’s must-see telly when there’s nothing else on. [Mof Gimmers]
