I hate comedy when set to music. I'm not talking about Spinal Tap... more... I don't really like Bill Bailey when he sings his songs. It's too studenty. Bailey is a hilarious man without the guitar thank you very much. Yep. It's all a bit too knowing and winking for my liking. Last night, I prepared myself for the worst with One Night Stand - Flight Of The Conchords (BBC Four, Tuesday 18 September, 9.30pm) which had been tipped by our Anna.
The show started, and there sat an awkward couple of blokes called Bret McKenzie and Jermaine Clement. They hail from New Zealand. Off the top of my bonce, I can't think of anything deemed funny that was NZ produced. Still, to dismiss it outright would be churlish wouldn't it? Wouldn't it?
After seeing this One Night Stand last night, I can echo the sentiment of many by saying that the comedy song has been rehabilitated by this piss funny duo. In fact, I'd like to go one further. This pair have taken a genre that stinks and spun gold from its rump. Often, comedy singalongs have been far too twee and forced. It's always been my view that something should look funny written down even when it's not being sung. The Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band make me laugh on paper AND on record. Jasper Carrot does not.
So, to prepare us TV dwellers for their proper series next week we got to see Flight of the Conchords live and direct. The show was mixed with genuinely funny musical expertise and complete off-the-wall daftness. This pair have incredible comedy timing (a minute change of expression is enough for a proper belly laugh). Mix that with a couple of uncool white boys sending up rap with their great Hip-Hopopotamus v Rhymenoceros and you get real mirth. Of the two, Jermaine is clearly the better comic. During their rap odyssey, his 'freestyling' segment was nothing short of sensational. Taking on black music is something that a lot of comedians do. Jokes about bitchez and hos are easy to think up... but they're incredibly difficult to pull off. Quite how these two did I don't know... but it worked... and it make me laugh.
I have a confession to make. I really didn't want to like this. When someone is heralded as new and fantastic in the comedy world, it usually means they're garbage. Doing the maths in my head, I decided that I was certainly going to dislike a pair of Antipodean comics who are the next big thing who sing funny songs. Yep. I'd hate them alright. How wrong I was. Within minutes of the opening of their routine I was fighting laughs. Nope. I was to stand firm and not give in to this nonsense. Then I did give in to the nonsense and it was wonderful. They are blessed with such incredible timing and inventiveness that it's hard to see these two not becoming the next big thing. I mean that. Flight of the Conchords are brilliant. Get cherishing.
