TV Review - Engaged and Underage, TMF, Monday, 10.30pm

engaged-underage.jpgSometimes love is a waiting game. You either wait to snare the heart of your affections, or, in some cases, you've already found love and you want to hang onto your virginity until you're wed. Some people just have to wait because they have frightening faces. No matter. We're looking at those who are waiting for some of that pure sex because last night, I watched Engaged and Underage (TMF, Monday 10.30pm).

Basically, this MTV produced show is a reality series following a young couple during the last weeks of their pre-nuptials. I (it's not out of the realms of my imagination to assume that I was the sole viewer for this show) got to follow David and Lauren; a pair of Christian virgins saving themselves for marriage. However, huge rain clouds of problems hang over this couple.

Like all couples who 'save' themselves, problems abound. Without experience, naivety dogs decisions. The couple often seem like children trying to wrestle with someone's accounts. Of course, this is the perfect opportunity for an overbearing mother to get involved... and luckily, David has one of those mothers that you only seem to see in American reality shows. The mother wants to get involved in absolutely everything. Even to the point where she wants to know what the bed looks like that David and Lauren will be having their first... uh... session. Rightly, Lauren thinks the whole things is "weird".

Even though I have no issue with those that choose to wait, I can't pretend that I don't find the notion puzzling. I like people who are rounded and have a wealth of experience to draw from. It often makes people much more interesting and equipped to deal with life. As these kids have seemingly been sheltered in their life, it leaves David looking like he's still breast feeding (Lauren even makes a jibe about him needing to "cut his umbilical chord") and Lauren looking rather petulant and childish. It's hardly an idyllic set up for the big day.

Anyway, the show ends with the couple all married up and exchanging vows. Then, a quick edit later, we see them the morning after in bed cooing at how "awesome" it was. Whether they were talking about their wedding or their love making isn't clear (I fear a creative edit was afoot) but they seem happy enough... then mum rings. [Mof Gimmers]
