This week the four remaining contestants got to choose their favourite two dances: one Ballroom, one Latin. Judge Len Goodman said that, in the opinion of the judges, the best four contestants were in the semi final and I agreed.
Apolo Anton Ohno was out first with the Quickstep and it was great fun. He and his partner, Julianne, are just so perfect together and they make it look effortless. Plus Julianne's dress was gorgeous. Len said it was fantastic. Bruno Tonioni said it was excellent. Carrie Ann thanked them for setting the standard "way high". Apolo said they wanted to be the first couple to get six 10s in one show and with a 30 for their first dance they were halfway there.
To try and take their dancing to the next level, Ian Ziering's partner Cheryl brought in a Motivational and Life Coach. I was confused because they did Tango and it seemed to be the same routine they did the last time they Tango'd. Despite his coaching, I didn't notice a great difference in Ian. His posture wasn't good and he still looked stiff. Bruno and Carrie Ann both thought it was only okay, but Len said it was Ian's best dance yet. Carrie Ann and Bruno both gave 9s, but Len gave a 10, which was nonsense because a 10 is for a perfect dance (which Len insists upon on Strictly Come Dancing) and it certainly wasn't perfect.
Laila Ali and her partner Max had a falling out so he brought her flowers and she invited him to her house to make up. They're very sweet together and I get the impression they're genuine friends (but then I thought that about Brendan Cole and Claire King and look how that turned out). Their Quickstep was inventive and entertaining and Laila actually makes the Ballroom almost look like Latin, she's so sexy. The judges loved it and they also scored 30.
Joey Fatone danced the Foxtrot and I really liked it. I love him anyway, but it was sweet, romantic, charming and, like all of his dances, really good fun. "Mr Showbiz at his best," said Bruno. Joey looked worried when waiting for the scores, but he needn't have done - it was another perfect score.
After an extended blether about Len going to help the couples perfect their technique, Apolo and Julianne were back with a fabulous Cha Cha Cha. It was sexy, funny, and it gave me the shivers. I loved it. It's staggering that Apolo's not a professional. It was so sexy that it made Carrie Ann blush, but Len said it was *too* raunchy with too few Cha Cha steps and gave them a 9, leaving them 1 point short of their goal. Spoilsport.
Ian and Cheryl did a Jive with Ian wearing a black Elvis wig. He danced really well - he probably found the wig freeing - but I actually found the routine a bit boring, I was drifting off. The judges were all impressed and they also scored 30 and I think Ian was almost in tears.
Laila and Max also did the Cha Cha Cha and it was really cute. I think out of everyone, she makes it look easiest. And it was another perfect score - giving them the 60 that Apolo and Julianne were looking for.
Joey and Kym's Jive was so fast and furious that I barely had time to think about anything - except how well he moves for a big lad. "You've got something everyone's got, but yours is much bigger," Len said, adding - "Personality!" He's a wag. Joey and Kym got yet another perfect score and therefore another 60/60. The judges are definitely more generous with the scores in Dancing With the Stars than they are in Strictly.
So Laila and Joey were joint top with 60 each, Apolo was second with 59 and Ian third (or, if you like, bottom) with 58. It was a little unfair, in my opinion - I think Apolo probably danced the best and should have been top, but there really is so little to choose between the top three. Ian was definitely the weakest of the four, though, so that was fair enough.
And so began the blether. First a performance from Enrique Iglesias. Then we learned that Joey and Kym were through to the final. Then a performance from Joaquin Cortes. Then Enrique was back with that infernal ping pong song. A comparison of Laila and Anton (sport) and Joey and Ian (entertainment). Then they asked the finalists' opinions on the other finalists. And then Laila and Max were through to the final and Ian and Cheryl were out (which meant Apolo and Julianne were through - are you keeping up?).
So Laila, Joey and Apolo are through to the final. I know who I want to win. How about you?
