Like last week, the remaining five celebs had to do two dances: Ballroom first and Latin second.
Ian Ziering was out first with the Foxtrot. It got off to rather a slow start, but then it kicked into a glamorous Hollywood routine and I enjoyed it. Judges Len Goodman and Bruno Tonioni said it wasn’t smooth enough, but Carrie Ann Inaba thought he danced with charm and exuberance, which I’m not sure I agree with.
Joey Fatone’s Waltz was gorgeous and also made me laugh out loud. Now there’s a man who dances with charm and exuberance, no matter what he does. Bruno and Carrie Ann both thought it was a bit boring, which it was … a bit, but Len loved it.
I felt last week that this week might well be Billy Ray Cyrus’s last. His Foxtrot was … poor. He just walked it and Karina did all the dancing. He actually looked like he was marking it out rather than trying to dance. Len said he did all the right steps, but all at the wrong time. Bruno said it was “deliciously awful”, which I didn’t agree with – it was just awful. Then Bruno said it was “crap” and, oh dear, Billy Ray was upset.
Laila Ali was next and, for the first time, her father was in the audience. (Her father’s Muhammad Ali, in case you didn’t know.) It could be suggested that him being there was as cynical as Billy Ray’s God Bless America stunt last week, but it made me cry rather a lot so nuts to that. Also, it was a charming, sweet Waltz and I love her.
Apolo Anton Ohno said he and Julianne were “shooting for a mind-blowing performance” with their Tango and, my god, did they ever deliver. Seconds in it gave me the shivers. It made me cry. It was absolutely incredible, despite being danced to Jessie’s Girl, which is so not a Tango. Bruno got totally over-excited. Len said it lacked passion and drama, was far too hectic, and he and Bruno almost came to blows, plus the audience were booing like mad. I actually thought he was joking, but no. The thing is it was modern and obviously too modern for Len. I thought it was amazing.
Ian’s Rumba was a bit blah. Carrie Ann didn’t think it was authentic. Len thought it looked unnatural, but Bruno liked it.
Hmmm. I wasn’t convinced by Joey’s Mambo either. It seemed a bit too quick and, at the same time, he looked like he was walking it, which was weird. Len said they spent too much time between each other’s legs. I didn’t love it, but I do love Joey.
Billy Ray’s Mambo was, inevitably, a lot slower and it was quite good fun, but I’ve started to find him a bit painful. “It’s hard to come back after that kind of rudeness,” said Billy Ray. They got 20 and were clearly upset and disappointed, but the thing is, he’s just not good!
Laila’s Jive was fabulous. It was great fun, it told a story, she looked amazing. I loved it. Len told Max off for taking too long to get into the actual dancing, the fussy bugger.
Apolo’s Paso Doble was, again, completely blimmin’ amazing. They leave me breathless. The choreography is incredible and they’re both such great dancers. Fabulous. It scored the only 30 of the night.
After everyone had danced both styles, Apolo and Julianne were top with, inevitably, Billy Ray and Karina bottom. After two – two! – songs by Nelly Furtado, Billy Ray and Karina and – shockingly! – Joey and Kym were in the bottom two. Of course, Billy Ray went home so Apolo, Ian, Joey and Laila are in next week’s semi-final. I can hardly wait.
