When do we think a TV channel should start advertising one of their programmes? A week in advance, maybe two? Any earlier than that and you would worry that audiences might forget to tune in. Teaser trailers that are short and snappy with a vague ‘coming soon’ announcement air weeks in advance, as do station promoting ones that tempt audiences with tasty promises of what that broadcaster will deliver over the coming season – but show specific, full-on, look-what’s-going-to-go-down adverts with the date featured are usually saved for a week or so in advance.
Not so with Sky One. They have been promoting the third season of Prison Break, due to air on Monday 24th September for a few weeks now. That means a lead-in time of about a month. Who needs a months notice to help plan their night in front of the TV? The Radio Times website seems pleased with itself for featuring the next fortnight’s worth of listings, while we at the Scoop try to give you a few days notice on what’s heading your way – but a month? God reckons he built the world in a week, just think what he could have done in a whole month.
I’ve heard of prepping your audience, but this seems crazy. I’m bored of the advert and it’s nowhere near the 24th yet. Sky One is also guilty of complete over-saturation, inserting the promo into practically every break just so that no-one has five minutes to forget that Prison Break is going to start on the 24th September. The 24th September. It’s been repeated so much that I feel like something important must be happening that day. My mum’s birthday? My anniversary? The end of the world? No, no, no – must be Prison Break.
I know Sky One is thrilled to have snatched it from Five but the constant adverts are like children bragging in a playground – “look what we’ve got.” I always thought that the idea of promoting your show was to attract attention, entice audiences and remind them to tune in. Apparently it’s to annoy your competition and alienate viewers – who’d have thought it?

This seems a bit harsh if you ask me. In the states, they have been playing adverts for certain shows for months now.
Some people set their lives around what they are going to watch and apparently Sky One understands this. People like to know when and what is going to be shown so oversaturation this is not. It's pure awareness of knowing what your audience wants.
Katie, this article shows a complete lack of understanding for the way television operates now. Taking into account the number of terrestrial and satellite networks, all making numerous offerings, it is imperative that networks get the word out there on a particular programme as early as possible.
Seeing as Sky One poached Prison Break from another network, it's therefore in their best interest to promote the new series and the tune in as early as possible.
As for only giving a few days worth of "scoop" on what to watch, in this age, that's hardly ample warning and extremely myopic, given the volume of programming available right now.
Do I want to see the same advert air 'round the clock? No, but I at least understand the rationale behind it.
haha
I also noticed that when SKY snatch series from other channels, they tend to "over advertise"; strong marketing tactic to let people know where their show (if they really like it) has moved to.
A month in advance does not seem so farfetched especially for returning shows but I also do not want to see the same thing over and over!!
What will annoy people is the fact that it is now on pay TV (satellite). They WILL surely lose some viewers from Channel 5.
Incidentally, I found your blog while looking for ..... the start date of this series :-P
Oh yes I agree, it is advertised all the time, but being a fan of the show, I usually switch off to another channel to avoid any spoiler when SKY screams "we've got Prison Break"!!!
Do any of these when there is an advert break (there are too many of those it is a real pain in the derriere!): Livepause with your sky+ then disappear for 5 or more minutes (I often do that at the beginning of a show) OR go out of the room and get a hot coco or a beer... Do not switch channels if you don't care about adverts since they all seem to be in sync.
I get over all this brainwashing thanks to my good friend SKY+. Pretty much everything I watch is recorded so I just need to fast forward.
its annoying if u havent got sky to watch. and have been watching it from the start its gutting really
