Having sat glued to my television from 10pm to 11pm every Sunday night for the past eleven weeks I have come to love Dexter. The darkly comic, macabre drama is the Tesco of TV - it has everything you could ever want. But alas no - for this Sunday's episode is to be the last in the current series. I've known this day was coming for a while and yet still as the hours tick away, my emotions continue to taunt me (much like the Ice Truck Killer does Dexter - ho ho.) I'm looking forward to the promised epic finale and the big reveal, but conversely I can't bear the idea that it will end and abandon me. What will I do without it?
Of course, I'm exaggerating for comic emphasis, my life isn't so woefully bleak and empty that I rely on an hour's entertainment to give it meaning. It's just that I hadn't expected to like it as much as I do. It feels like a whirlwind romance, much like love at first sight. I didn't know such an overwhelming attraction could be fashioned so early in one's viewing - now I know better. Dexter is my new TV crush and I hate preparing to say goodbye.
Last week's penultimate episode saw both Dexter and Deb realising that Rudy is the Ice Truck Killer. Dexter worked it out with a spot of clever detective work while Deb was completely unaware until he menacingly hissed the truth at her before knocking her unconscious - the charmer. Now it is up to Dexter to save his little sister from Rudy's evil clutches, though I suspect it could be a tad difficult. Rudy is a clever cat and has enjoyed stringing Dexter along. What new tricks will he have up his sleeve and what of Dexter's early years? Could it all somehow come together?
On the outskirts of the action are Laguerta, Doakes, Angel and Rita. Laguerta was fired as lieutenant last week, but as a ballsy, uncompromising female the show would lose so much without her, much like Rita who continues to gradually assert her authority on her troubled relationship with jailed ex Paul. Angel has to move forward now that his ex-wife has confirmed that she has no intention of the pair reuniting, while Doakes obviously has a thing for Deb.
What will be resolved on Sunday night and what will spill over to season two? And most importantly how long will we have to wait in the UK until we get the second series? I've never been one for long-distance romances, but in this case I'm happy to make the exception. I will just to have remind myself of the good times I've shared with Dexter until the show returns to me. Hopefully soon.
