Gail Platt’s here to stay, apparently

gail_platt.jpg“I keep thinking I’m going to be put out to grass for a bit and then along comes another extraordinary storyline,” says veteran of the cobbles Helen Worth, who makes it clear in today’s News of the World that she has no intention of quitting her part in the UK’s top soap Coronation Street.

Why Helen! Whoever suggested you would? Methinks this another snippet of news that isn’t really news. Someone saying they’re not going to do something that no-one expected them to do in the first place. 56-year-old Helen has played Gail Platt for 33 years. Like Ken Barlow and Emily Bishop, to name but two, you can’t really imagine them doing anything else.

“I’m here for good. I love my job and I never get bored,” Helen added. With storylines like the current one involving “evil David” it’s hardly surprising. In fact the only surprising thing is that David is alone in having severe mental problems. Such is the concentration of psychological trauma in the Platt household it’s a wonder the entire building doesn’t collapse into another dimension like something out of Poltergeist.

The only thing missing really is the return of wayward Dad Martin to help sort David out. It can only be a matter of time surely? Since leaving the soap in 2005 actor Sean Wilson has had precisely four bit parts in primetime telly (Silent Witness, Dalziel & Pascoe, Casualty and Doctors) as well as appearing in Dancing on Ice and Soapstar Superchef (a slight misnomer as he wasn’t a soapstar at the time).

So with work drying up faster than you can say “oh…GaYUL” I think it’s high time Martin was brought back from the wilds of Liverpool to cause even more emotional turmoil in the house of Usher Platt. [via DS]
