Back for a new series, the Grumpy Old Women return as dour and miserable as ever. Continuing with their anti-everything tirade, they're recharged and PMT-patched-up to the max.
It's very similar to the usual format; Jenny Eclair is the lady with the sharpest wits, Germaine Greer lords over everything, and Jenni Trent Hughes - y'know, that agony aunt and relationship expert - just seems like she wants to lie down and stroke a fluffy kitten. No inuendo intented. However there is one addition to the Grumpy Old Women that is one witch too many...
I was very displeased to see Fiona Philips as one of the new Women. And by displeased, I mean vomitting bile through my eyes. As if she isn't bad enough at seven in the morning, or on the front cover of health shop magazines, she is now poking her nose into our precious Friday nights. She is up there on my hatred list - yes, I have a list - with Natasha Kaplinsky. Anyway, where was I?
Yes, so, the first episode of GOW focused on an easy target - computers and technology. Damn internet! And addictive crack-like email! Damn these things that everyone else has problems with, but we're just moaning about them on television because we're sort-of famous and we can! Then they went on and on (and on) about spam and how horrid it is. News flash! We all get it! Activate your spam filter!
Next, there were mixed thoughts on eBay. Muriel Gray loves it, but the biggest snobbery of the internet auction site, unsurprisingly, came from Lady Philips. She is proud she has never bought anything from the site, which she thinks is just full of filthy, second-hand tat. Well you just showed ignorance there, Fifi, as you obviously have never visited the site, and researched this before recording your bloody piece. Sorry for that, but her cocky boorishness is grating.
Finally, the Women discussed catalogues, and how there is nothing better than a nice sit-down, a cup of tea and a good catalogue. I have to say, I can actually understand their joy - oh no, I am turning into one of them! - at dedicating time to having a good old browse through the latest seasonal tome of some catalogue store.
Next weeks episode - Beat the Clock: time and multitasking. Friday 10th August, BBC2, 10pm.
