Like some horrendous TV baton being passed from one relay to the next, last night, after spending too long circling in the air (I was on a plane you understand – I’m not superhuman), I was greeted with the next generation of TV Madeleys. On Big Brother‘s Big Mouth (E4, Every week night, 10pm) I was faced with the fruits of the loins that belong to Richard Madeley and Judy Finnegan. I’m sorry if you’ve just yelped up a bilious corn-flake when thinking of those two at it.
Anyway, the proof and puddings of the combined Madeley groin stepped up to host the E4 entertainment vessel once presented by Russel Brand (*spit*). How did they do? Did I do anything other than compare them to their parents? And most of all, is BBBM any good?
Firstly, let’s look at BBBM. The show, since the departure of Russel Brand, has had a whole host of guest hosts. The first was the loathsome Chris Moyle. Rotund boistery designed to whip up the rowdy and bawdy crowd to act like drunks and spout off about the goings on in the Big Brother house. Aside from the fact he’s probably perfect for a show like this, I couldn’t help but wonder that Channel 4 were once again showing themselves to be a bit on the hypocritical side. I mean, you can’t scald a housemate for repeated use of the word ‘gay’ (as in ‘that’s a bit gay’) and then hire a man who was once chastised for calling people ‘gay’ on his radio show. Sadly, I sometimes fear that I’m the only person who notices things like this in the world. Since then, we’ve had Pete Burns (vile in the best possible taste *crosses legs*) and some other people who I recognised from the box, but alas, have no idea what their names are.
So, with Jack and Chloe Madeley taking up the show, it was intriguing to see one of TVs most famous couples (on these shores at least) letting their kids loose on camera. Thankfully, we didn’t see two toddlers charging around, fuelled by E numbers (although that would have been funny) but rather, two svelte teens who couldn’t help but resemble their folks.
As I’ve not plotted the lives of this pair, I can’t tell you whether or not Chloe Madeley dyes her locks or not, but the fact remains, two Madeleys appeared on my screen, the girl blond and the boy tall with dark hair. Chloe, dressed in evening wear (with added sequins) and Jack, dressed in jeans and a top with the sleeves rolled up to the elbow… and yep… there was more than an air… a stench if you like… of their folks about them (again). Even Jack’s hair is a bit like his pa’s.
Now, if these two were truly representative of their parents, we would have watched Jack consistently shushing his little sister. Looking at his face, and his BBC world service voice chirruping up through the yells and caterwauls of the giddy BBBM crows, you started to drift off into another place – The Madeley home – and hear Jack shushing his sister when he and daddio are talking. Then, the distant rattle of china as Judy trembles with the tea-cups.
Of course, it’s completely unfair to continually compare them to their parents, but hey, tough shit. That’s life. When I bump into people, they’re always telling me how much I resemble me mum or me dad. Thankfully for Chloe and Jack, they don’t resemble too much. Both cut impressive figures and are better looking than their famous creators. I’ve got no idea whether they fancy a job in front of the camera or not, but after presenting BBBM, they must be thinking about it.
Whilst Chloe padded nervously around the studio, before settling in and spouting off with the best of them, you could imagine her getting a few jobs. A holiday show maybe? Same goes for Jack. You could see the nerves through his grinning and authority, but by no means did he make a complete fool of himself. Then, thinking about them getting TV work, it occurred to me: Will anyone offer them jobs apart? Will these two only get offers as a couple so we can all constantly liken them to Richard and Judy? I think it’s probably the case and, on the strength of last night, won’t be too bad. As long as they don’t start turning into caricatures of their folks. [Mof Gimmers]
