Whilst enduring the woefully abysmal Lovespring International, I was happily distracted by the adverts (how bad is the programme when you look forward to the break I ask you?), especially some of the new TV show DVD box-sets released. And so I thought I’d help you with your shopping and tell you what new telly delights are available today for your perusal.
Deadwood: Season 3
Currently in cinemas as the baddie in Die Hard 4, Timothy Olyphant is less nasty in this western romp from HBO. He leaves all such offensiveness to Ian McShane, who after being lady’s man Lovejoy, chews on scenery for fun in the town of outlaws.
Oz: Season 2
I have shared with TV Scoop my total adoration of Oz (see here), and already owning the Region 1 version of this release, encourage you all to go and sniff around this one in HMV. Maybe not one for those of a sensitive disposition (we are talking hard-core violent prison inmates here), but for those who appreciate provocative and original entertainment, this is your next purchase.
Jekyll: Series 1
It’s only just finished on TV (I still have it waiting for me on my Sky+), but the James Nesbitt star vehicle is now out in the shops. The show lost viewers as the weeks progressed and had a mixed response from critics, but here at the Scoop, we looked to the charming John to give us the Jekyll low-down (see here for you all you need to know.)
That ‘70s Show: Season 6
It launched the Hollywood careers of Topher Grace (Spiderman 3) and Ashton Kutcher (er, hubbie to Demi Moore), and still airs on Paramount 1, but I must admit that I’ve never been one for retro comedy That ‘70s Show. Am I missing out on something or is this teeny trash that I do well to avoid? Maybe my genuine love of flares and lava lamps make me too crusty for such ironic offerings.
Star Stories: Season 1
Good UK comedies are a bit thin on the ground these days, but Star Stories seems to have really caught on with audiences. The Radio Times enthuses that “somewhere in there, there’s a belly laugh for everyone” and so with the second series currently airing on Friday nights, now is clever timing for the first outing to debut on DVD.
Doctor Who: Volume 3 of the new series
The BBC must be really keen to ship out its Saturday nights onto DVD, as this is the second DVD on this list to have propped up BBC1’s weekend scheduling just recently. What’s to say that you don’t know about this already? If the answer to that is a shamed blush or a confused frown, search the archives and swot up on all things Doctor.
The 4400: Season 3
This might be a US sci-fi show focusing on people with strange gifts, but this ain’t Heroes. Before the brothers Petrelli came the 4400, Sky One’s show of abductees returned to Earth and the traumatic aftermath of this intergalactic mystery. With the current craze for more ‘genre’ programmes, maybe this will find more fans on DVD.
