It didn’t make my top ten list of shows that were prematurely cancelled, but it came pretty close. Dead Like Me, followed the adventures of the newly-deceased George as she learned the subtle art of reaping, but after only 29 episodes on air, the US comedy drama was axed. However good news could be on the cards as TV Squad is reporting news of a much-anticipated comeback. Of sorts.
A few months back, plans for a made-for-DVD movie were announced, but were not followed up with many details. Okay, so this might not be the return to TV that some were hoping for, but as is often the case with so-called ‘niche’ or ‘genre’ shows – you gotta take what you can get. Now the info is out there (though some of it is yet to be confirmed), and fans can finally find out what lies in store for George.
Ellen Muth will return to the role of George, however it is believed that Mandy Patinkin will not be reprising his role as Rube. Originally this was due to his filming Criminal Minds, and though he has since left this show, it is believed that shooting for the film started before he had. This change might be explained in the film by the two-year jump into the future that has occurred since the programme concluded. Mandy is not the only original cast member with a conflicting schedule, with Laura Harris (Daisy) attached to new series Women’s Murder Club. The character will remain, but casting has not been confirmed for the role.
George will narrate the film as she did the series and to help compensate for the absence of Rube, at least two new characters will be introduced. These are Calvin Kane, a new head reaper, described as a “slick businessman who couldn’t care less about helping the newly dead”, and Hudson Hart, the secret boyfriend of Reggie.
The plot involves George having to reap Hudson, and through this, re-connecting with Reggie for the first time since her death. With the help of Calvin, Daisy (whose head is turned by the new head reaper) lands the role of an understudy in a production of After the Fall, though is so determined to secure the lead part, that she deliberately injures the play’s lead actress. This rise to theatrical prominence proves stressful though and Daisy soon turns to drink.
With Daisy’s boozing, Calvin dates a rich woman and throws a party at his swanky penthouse home. Roxy, Daisy, Mason and George attend, but the party fares better for some than others. George is annoyed with Calvin for messing up a reap and Daisy tries to fashion George into being someone she’s not. Mason has a good time though, chatting up the ladies and working his moves while later on Roxy finds that a reap she saved has died.
I know these details are pretty sketchy, and are just parts of a greater whole that cannot be fully understood at this early stage, but at least its something.
