Is it me, or have the listings made for dour reading of late? Thursday night is back on form... but the weekend? It's all been dross! Let's see if this weekend is any different...
Friday - Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Film4, 9pm
As mentioned by our resident film buff, John, Eternal Sunshine... is one of the most wonderful films ever made. Sweet, without ever becoming saccharine, and thought provoking without ever being too clever-clever, this Michel Gondry masterpiece sees Jim Carey giving the performance of a lifetime with Kate Winslet giving great support. Unfathomably, neither are annoying in this fantastic film. A must-see for those who still believe in humankind.

Saturday - A Very British Sex Scandal, Channel 4, 9pm
Channel 4 kicks off its week of programmes marking the 40th anniversary of the decriminalisation of homosexuality with a drama documentary about an electrifying 1954 court case. Of course, in the fifties, homosexuals were mercilessly bullied and abused (often by the police force) and the prosecution of Daily Mail journalist Peter Wildeblood and Lord Montagu of Beaulieu for a string of homosexual 'offences' transfixed Britain and ultimately led to an improved attitude towards gay men. It's a timely piece of programming to show one of the greatest civil rights victories in recent years.
Sunday - Father Ted, More4, 11.05pm
It really doesn't matter which Father Ted is being shown. Even if you've seen it a million times before, it's still hilarious and full of memorable lines and sublime slapstick.
One To Avoid - Most Haunted Almost Live, FTN, Saturday, 9pm
If this show is going to be as honest to say 'almost live' then surely it should be called 'Not even slightly haunted, nor entertaining, almost live'... eh?
