TV Review - Gordon Ramsay's F Word, Channel 4, 9pm

lancashire_lasses.jpgSeries three. Done. For the time being, we can all go back to hearing recipes delivered in a normal, more coversational manner, rather than Ramsay's (and now his new Fanny Craddock - a young lady called Ravinder - is at it as well) abrupt and confusing bullet point tips.

Last night's show wasn't a bad one on reflection. Gordon Ramsay's F Word (Channel 4, Tuesday, 9pm) often suffers from trying too damned hard. It aches to be cutting edge and... edgy... when it mostly succeeds when all concerned relax a little. With it being the last in the series, the show climaxed with the best cooks from this 3rd series, the pictured Lancashire Lasses, who cooked up a near perfect storm in the kitchen... but it was Johnny Vegas who stole the show.

One of the main problems when reviewing F Word is that it follows a very strict format. It ALWAYS contains the same things in the same spot. Gordon walks into kitchen to rapturous applause, then goes to meet his staff. Sandwiched in the middle is an 'informal' chat with a celeb (last night, the childish fanged Ricky Gervais), a look at Gordon at home with his sheep, the post-it note recipe, another trip to someone else's house and a cook-off with another sleb. Oh, and "uh?" and "yes?" punctuate every scene.

Gordon without his gimmicks is like Apple Macintosh without the letter 'i'. He's simply buggered. There is no questioning Ramsay's cookery talents... and in fact... he can be quite warm and engaging (as we saw in his Kitchen Hell series). However, in a dryer show, Gordon is just another cook with the added 'value' of a foul mouth. When faced with a real personality, namely Johnny Vegas, Ramsay visibly becomes a bit unstuck.

One cracking exchange saw Ramsay trying it on with Vegas, who playfully batted him aside saying "I just want to be you Gordon... if they made clothes in your style I'd buy them... me and my mates have Gordon Ramsay parties where we all sit around telling each other to fuck off." With that, the finest line of the series was delivered... and I found myself actually enjoying the show. Thank god it's finished... I may have sucked in. [Mof Gimmers]
