Looks like my Sky Plus is in for a busy night tonight, as not only do we have Dirt on Five US at 9pm, but also The New Adventures of Old Christine on UKTV Gold (yes, you read correctly, UKTV Gold - go figure!) This sitcom is a star vehicle for actress Julia Louis-Dreyfus who won hearts as the Queen of the Castle Elaine Benes in seminal 1990s sitcom Seinfeld. The show has managed to escape the infamous 'Seinfeld curse' where popularity is hard to achieve for the actors in subsequent roles (see: Michael Richards (Kramer) in the Michael Richards Show and Jason Alexander (George) in Bob Patterson and Listen Up! - on second thoughts - don't!) with the third season due to air in the US soon. Louis-Dreyfus has even bagged an Emmy for the show to sit with her Seinfeld awards and was recently the commencement speaker at her alma mater of Northwestern University.

But is the show any good?

Tonight us in Blighty will get to make up our own minds as the show opens with a double-bill. Julia is the Christine from the title, a divorcee, mum and owner of a woman's gym. Yes - she has a lot on her plate and the sitcom hijinks rev into overdrive with the introduction of her ex husband's young girlfriend, also called Christine (must have a thing for the name.) This is all a straight lift from writer Kari Lizer's own life experiences, but with a CV boasting duties on Will and Grace, the credentials begin to mount up in the show's favour. Looking through the rest of the cast, I recognised Clark Gregg who plays Christine's ex Richard as the guy who showered after sex with Miranda in Sex and the City (what can I say? My brain IS imdb) and I'll be hoping that he doesn't feel the need for any post-coital bathing in this.

I really do have high hopes for this programme. I loved Julia in 'Seinfeld' and having warmed to her during her interviews on the 'Seinfeld' box-sets really feel like I want to champion her new offering. It's not the most original concept (sitcoms not tending to pioneer new directions in TV) but hope that it can straddle the current trend for witty, female-based shows to best effect.
