I confess that I haven’t been quite as loyal to Project Runway, as I had been to its British counterpart Project Catwalk. That might be because Sky One has played with its time slot or because I simply cannot handle a weekly dose of catty wannabe fashionistas. I don’t know. What I am pretty sure of, is that tomorrow night’s concluding part of the grand finale will be one not to miss.
The first part aired last week, with the final three contestants (pictured left to right) Chloe Dao, Daniel Vosovic and Santino Quinto all reduced to hysterical panic. Not only were they lagging behind at completing their collections, but were beyond frazzled when host Heidi Klum and mentor Tim Gunn presented them with a last-minute challenge: that of producing one more ensemble. Of course, the prospect of knocking out another outfit had all three contestants ready to throw a strop worthy of Naomi Campbell, but when given the help of a past contestant to assist them, they managed to soldier on.
But how will it end and who will win? Daniel’s been a bit of a dark horse in lots of ways and I think made a very wise choice in selecting Nick Verreos to help him out. Nick was a real stand-out, and I still can’t believe he’s not competing for the top prize. Chloe has been consistently brilliant and is much deserving of her place, even if choosing Diana Eng to support her was a leftfield decision. I am slightly divided though when it comes to Chloe, as she herself has questioned how much she actually wants to win. It’s tough to root for someone when their dedication and commitment falters and though very gifted, Chloe might not last long in the fashion industry if she’s already looking for the way out.
And Santino? Dear God – how did he make it so far? He constantly tinkers with his clothes right up until the last minute, as though incapable of appreciating when something is finished. As a result his garments are often overly elaborate and fussy, sacrificing comfort, practicality and durability for some crudely applied frills. His behaviour has been rude, disrespectful and cruel. Yes, I understand that as a competition you do not need to be on best friend terms with your competitors, but general civility doesn’t sound like too much to ask. Santino started the show as a front-runner, winning the first challenge and coming close with the second, but his attitude and arrogance have seen him lose favour with the judges.
And it all comes down to their final collection to see who will get to show in the Bryant Park tents during New York’s Fashion Week. Who’s your money on?
