Jonathan Ross bows out interviewing JK Rowling

jk_rowling.jpgSo it's not just ITV that's gone Harry Potter crazy. With the fifth movie - Harry Potter And The Order Of The Phoenix - released in six days' time and the final book of the series - Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows - hitting the country's bookstores nine days later, what better time for Wossy to pull off an exclusive interview with Potter's creator JK Rowling.

Rowling doesn't give many interviews, but when she does, the pearls of Potterdom drip from her tongue and tonight they will, as tradition dictates, be cast before swine.

After so many years, it sounds as though she's glad it's all over:

"Finishing the book is a relief, I can feel more relaxed... I can't think of anyone who could know how I felt. Actually finishing it was the most remarkable feeling I've ever had... [I felt] euphoria, devastated, when I finished one chapter near the end I absolutely howled, it had been planned for so long. I was in a hotel room on my own, I was sobbing my heart out, I downed half a bottle of champagne from the mini-bar in one and went home with mascara all over my face, that was really tough."

Like saying goodbye to a member of the family perhaps? Speculation has been rife for some time that Rowling will kill Potter off in the final episode, if only to protect him from future escapades, possibly at the hands of other authors.

During the interview she also discusses her inspiration for the three main characters (no surprises here for knowledgeable fans) and her relationship with the actors who portray them. And then the subject returns inevitably to the all-important topic of the last word of the last book. Rowling has been quoted before as saying that the final chapter was written some time ago, and has remained locked in a safe ever since. Apparently, she's retrieved it for a bit of a rewrite:

"Scar? It was so for ages, and now it's not. Scar is quite near the end, but it's not the last word."

Ross is also joined tonight by Bob Hoskins talking about his latest role in Sparkle; and How To Look Good Naked presenter Gok Wan. Live music for tonight's final show in the series will be provided by The Arctic Monkeys performing new single Fluorescent Adolescent, and Paul Weller and Graham Coxon performing For Dancers Only. The show will be back for a new series after its summer break, in September.
