So here we go then. It’s spatulas at the ready for the great Celebrity MasterChef cook-off. Now admittedly when there are your Big Brothers and your Apprentices knocking about, CM should come right at the bottom in terms of interest. But I make no apologies for fuffing loving this show – the food, the challenges, and the hosts (John Torode and Gregg Wallace). I’ve even warmed to the D-Listers who have taken part.

So for this final, we have Midge Ure, Nadia Sawalha and Craig Revel-Horwood battling it out for this year’s title. Midge has been very consistent all through the competition and loves his Asian flavours, Nadia has demonstrated that she can pack a punch when it comes to flavour but struggles on presentation, while Craig is a bit mad – he sweats, shakes and piles more elements to dishes than the judges know what to do with. Tonight’s final should all be about food and one big cook-off, so it should be fun. I’ll have the Shakeometer going, charting the severity of Craig’s shake, while I’m backing Nadia to win. Over the page is where it all starts (and finishes)… enjoy!

6.58pm: It starts two minutes early! And Gregg is shouting already: “THESE CELEBRITIES ARE ALL PASSIONATE ABOUT FOOD!”. John chips in: “THE PRESSURE IS IMMENSE!”. Craig, Midge and Nadia are explaining how much they want to win, all saying that the whole journey has been incredible and one of the most rewarding things they’ve ever done. I wonder if they can hear Gregg and John SHOUTING in the other room.

It’s one last meal, and the three finalists enter the kicthen to that weird synth music that suggests tension. Three courses, two hours! And they’re off. John urges them to make him and Gregg proud. No pressure then.

Craig cracks an egg. He’s not shaking. Yet.

7.03pm: Midge looks cool, calm and collected. He’s cooking goats cheese and apple fritters to start with, seabass for main and lemon mousse for pudding. He says he’s bricking it and has gone for the hard options. John and Gregg wonder whether he can pull the ambitious menu off.

7.05pm: We’re on to Craig. There are beads of perspiration already appearing on his brow. He’s cooking a prawn tart for a starter, venison with a pink peppercorn sauce and white and dark chocolate mousse to finish with. He’s going for it – pastry! Gregg is already salivating at the thought of a chocolate overload for pudding.

7.10pm: Nadia is cooking roasted quail, seabass with tahini and rose water ice cream. Sounds nice.

But wait! Midge is having problems with his horse radish sauce, Nadia’s kitchen looks like a bomb has hit it, and Craig is starting to sweat big time. But, curiously, he’s not shaking.

But we’re already on to the tasting!

7.15pm: Midge is up first. They love his goats cheese starter (right on the money says Gregg), his seabas goes down well too. But it’s the lemon mousse that’s the problem – not enough lemon, says John, and it’s too rich.

Meanwhile, they’re really going for it over Nadia’s food. John has just told her that her food is sexy. That’s quite a good sign! The roasted quail is “a lovely moist bird”, and her seabass is wonderful and goes very well with the rich tahini sauce. John’s not sure about the rose water ice cream, but Gregg loves it.

I’d say Nadia is in the lead. Oh dear, here comes Craig.

7.20pm: Craig is drenched in sweat, and Gregg is happily reminding him about his sweating and shaking during the series.

They love his prawn tart (“beautifully made pastry,” says John), and they love his venison too. BUT, he hasn’t washed the peppercorns from their brine and it makes the dish taste too salty. His double choc mousse is too rich, says John. And for Gregg, who likes a pudding or two, it’s even too rich for him!

Craid starts to shake, but I’m disappointed at his lack of shaking throughout the programme. Shakeometer: surprisingly non-Judy Finnigan.

7.23pm: Gregg and John are in their little room discussing what they’ve just eaten. They loved Midge’s stuff, but were disappointed with the dessert. Nadia’s they liked a lot too, but John had reservations about her ice cream. They talk about Craig, how far he’s come and progressed. This can only mean one thing – Craig hasn’t won.

They all gather in the kitchen for the result. Gregg is laying it on thick – he’s using words like “not easy”, “privelege” and “honour” all in the same sentence. Craig is still soaked through, but he’s not shaking like a sh***ing dog like he normally does. That’s a victory in itself.

Now it’s over to John to announce the result – it’s Nadia!!!

John says she cooked food that made his heart thump, Gregg nods in agreement, and her Middle Eastern-influenced food was delicate but flavoursome and was beautifully presented. They also conclude that this year’s competition has provided them with some of the most extraordinary food they’ve ever tasted on MasterChef. And that’s quite a statement.

Nadia is now crying.

Fine work! Not surprisingly I’m now really hungry, but it looks like beans on toast for me.

Nice work, although it’s a shame that the third voice on the show, the narrator, India Fisher, never seems to get a mention on these things. She’s brill too, just the right amount of haughtiness — and in the full show, I’m surprised she doesn’t go mental having to say things like ‘For now they can relax, but tomorrow they’ll face a bigger challenge…’ for each episode.

Obviously I should admit that she was one of the reason I watched the show in the first place — she plays Charley Pollard, one of the companions in the Big Finish Doctor Who audios with Paul McGann (not including the BBC7 stories).

Pity that Midge failed to win.
Obviously a viewer cannot taste his food but, from the judge’s comments, it seemed to be of at least equal standard to Nadia’s. But it encompassed a wider range (and complexity) of cuisines – far eastern, italian etc. One thing that sets him head and shoulders above Nadia is his cool calm collected approach – he is not scatter-brained and disorganised as Nadia – and is far more consistant.

I agree with your comments about Craig – I cannot understand how he ever reached the final!
