I admit it, if there is nothing else on, I will turn to E4 and watch repeats of Friends. I know it’s not the most sophisticated, mature or innovative of sitcoms but before I know what I’m doing, I’m flicking over to E4 and immersing myself in the world of Chandler, Ross and co. I find myself inexplicably relating to the neurotic Monica Geller-Bing, formerly Geller, and so am interested by the news of Courtney Cox-Arquette’s new show to hit the airwaves. Can she hang up her chef’s hat and shed the Monica persona that made her name?

I’m sure she’ll give it her ruddy best as tabloid editor Lucy Spiller in Dirt, 9pm Monday 9th July on the rather obscure channel Five US. Press for the show is keen to label the character as ‘ruthless’ and ‘bitchy’, which does make me wince and screw up my face in a less than flattering way – bitchy by American terms usually falls short of my bitter UK interpretation, but I’m happy to momentarily unscrunch to be proven otherwise. The show co-stars Will and Grace’s Eric McCormack and Brit fave Ian Hart, and with Courtney and hubbie David Arquette exec producing, the showbiz pedigree is there.

The careers of her ‘Friends’ chums have yet to excel, so there’s not much to beat. Let’s hope it fares better than Lisa Kudrow’s The Comeback. And Matthew Perry’s Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip. And Matt LeBlanc’s spin-off show Joey. All cancelled. Hell – a second series in the bag and you’re Queen of the castle!
