For the final of Any Dream Will Do, they’d hauled the ousted Josephs back to open the show with Go Go Go Joseph along with the controversial winning school choir.
The final decision was entirely down to public vote, no say from Andrew Lloyd Webber at all. The final three - Lee, Lewis and Keith - were flown out to Majorca, which they got quite inexplicably excited about. Well, I suppose they could do with a break. Obviously with just three contestants left, there was loads of filler, the Josephs talking about their “journey” so far, along with clips galore.
As presenter Graham Norton was talking there was a shot of David Tennant looking very hairy and cute. I was a bit confused until a glimpse of Jonathan Ross suggested that there might be a celebrity audience. Ooh, I do love a nice celeb audience.
I complained last week that Lewis has had a high number of wet songs, but this week he had Prince/Tom Jones's Kiss. It was a confident performance, but it was “pop” rather than “theatre” even though he did some great dancing. In fact, it looked like he actually might be a better dancer than a singer.
I think I’ll cut the judges’ comments short since they were pretty much nice about everyone, but John Barrowman did say that if Lewis had given a performance like that earlier he never would have been in the bottom two so often.
Keith was next with For Once In My Life and he was great. I thought it was a bit low for him, but his voice sounded strong and he was confident and more engaged than he’s been in previous weeks. He really reminded me of John Barrowman, actually.
No doubt I’ve said this before, but Lee’s acting is streets ahead of the others. His performance of Devil in Disguise wasn’t one of my favourites, but it was very good.
More waffle (Lewis celebrated his 18th at Lloyd Webber’s house in Majorca) and then it was time for them to perform big band numbers.
Lewis was first with Beyond the Sea. It was great, but, you know, it was Beyond the Sea... I was more interested to see that Jason Donovan was sitting behind Lewis’s Nanna Jean.
Keith did Moondance. I’m sorry, that’s not a big band song. His diction was a bit dodgy - I would have preferred “one more Moondance with you” but I got “one more Moondance with yeeeeew” - but he pulled it back and it was really good. I can’t stand the song, but it was a good performance. Denise said it was “hot, hot, hot” and that he’s turning into a mini John Barrowman. See!
Lee got the best song - New York, New York. (I wonder if they gave him a stormer because they want him to win and it was their way of giving him a bit of an advantage). It worked for me - it made me smile and gave me shivers. Andrew said Lee’s so good he could still have made that song work if it had been called Torquay, Torquay.
The three then teamed up to perform Maria from West Side Story. They started out of time, but the song suited all three of them and it was short, but gorgeous (rather like me).
The lines were then frozen and one of the Josephs had to go ... but not until a performance from How Do You Solve A Problem Like Maria winner Connie Fisher. I’ve never seen her sing before and I wasn’t that impressed. Pretty voice, but she’s so twee!
Finally - “For the first time this evening ... the nation will speak” Graham said. Not over-dramatising or anything. Lee was through first and then Lewis was out (which meant Keith was through, just in case you’re not keeping up). Poor Lewis. People were weeping in the audience. Lewis cried, little thing, but still had to Close Every Door. Being so upset, he made a right pig’s ear of it. John was comforting Denise. See, I’m not the only one who gets emotionally involved. Yes, you might say she’s got more reason to be cos she actually is involved, but that would be nitpicking in my opinion.
I had thought I’d be okay with Keith winning, but once it got down to just him and Lee I really wasn’t. So I voted for Lee, just to be on the safe side.
Keith and Lee performed an encore of what they thought was their best song of the competition. Keith chose Always On My Mind (I thought his Love Is All Around was better) and Lee Paint It Black and there was no contest - Lee's Paint It Black was the performance of the series.
But it still wasn’t over. The former Josephs were back again to perform The Boys Are Back In Town. Even Lewis was included, which suggests they rehearsed it in the interval. Bit harsh. “Lewis, you’re not Joseph - now can you just do this song with the other losers?”
Yet another performance - the last performance - from Keith and Lee: Jesus Christ Superstar. I didn’t understand a word Keith sang (but then I saw Jesus Christ Superstar on stage and didn’t understand a word then either). I understood Lee though. I voted for him again (I don’t usually vote more than once so I decided to think of it as a charity donation rather than a strange obsession with the career of a complete stranger).
Inevitably, there was a look back over the entire series. “Sometimes it ended it tears,” said Graham. “In fact, it always ended in tears.” I have enjoyed all the crying, I must admit.
Finally... the winning Joseph was Lee Mead. He cried, of course. Keith was very sweet, but was given short shrift: no comment, ushered off the stage, and didn’t even get to sing Close Every Door!
Lee got the Technicolour Dreamcoat and closed the show with Any Dream Will Do. Seeing the judges and Andrew Lloyd Webber doing the “ah-ahs” was good fun and, yes, I shed a tear or ten. Fabulous.

Oh, it was wonderful! I was so excited and I voted for Lee about nine times - I'm going, so I was invested!
Keith's songs bored me as his voice is great but his performance skills are weaker. Plus he's cocky.
Lee was outstanding! Yay!
PS: I think Connie has a fab voice, but I *hate* that song... the hills are blah.
Yay!
I voted about 10 times for Lee as well...
He's gorgeous and perfect for Joseph
I'll def go & see it
Yayhay! I voted four times for Lee - my phone bill's going to be horrendous since I wasn't the only one voting in our house. Plus I'm going!!! I'll see Leeeeeee! Excited isn't in it....
(PS Keris, you really have to stop making me laugh btw - I read this review at work and it's really embarrassing.)
