So, some classic Peep Show action in this episode: Jeremy does something morally objectionable, Mark goes all starry-eyed in Johnson’s presence, Big Suze is very posh…
Yup, all the usual discomfort, terrible decision-making and general inability to cope with the rubbish life throws at you was present and correct. And it was funny. But that doesn’t mean that this episode wasn’t a complete mess…
Now before you start throwing things, I did laugh, and I did enjoy it. But it was all over the place! The number of ideas that were in this episode could have kept them going for half a series. Let’s count them up – first, the indecent proposal. We haven’t even seen Jeremy and Big Suze as a functioning couple and Jez has already done something to completely ruin it. (Actually, that’s about right for him, but the Indecent Proposal was offered and accepted within one scene which seemed just a little rushed). Then there was the lap-dancing scene – surely more could have been done with this? It’s a brilliant situation to put Mark in but again it was a bit wasted in my opinion. You’d have thought that these two storylines should have been plenty, but they threw in a kiss between Jeremy and Soph, too.
Maybe I just don’t get it. For a viewer like me who’s all about the emotion, (that’s why I liked the Life on Mars ending) a kiss between a man and his best-friend’s fiancee should be treated as a massive deal. But that’s just not the Peep Show way, is it? People are mean, and their fleeting moments of conscience just don’t make up for it. Maybe I just need to toughen up. [annawaits]
