Sir David Jason to star in new Sky Pratchett adaptation

By Paul Hirons on April 27th, 2007 7 comments

Hogfather Sir David Jason, who starred in Sky One’s hugely successful adaptation of Terry Pratchett’s Hogfather, has signed up to star in the channel’s next big adaptation of the fantasy writer’s work, The Colour Of Magic. Hogfather was Sky One’s big break-out success last year (one the channel’s few bright programming spots). In Hogfather, Sir David played Death’s little helper Albert, but for The Colour Of Magic he’s signed on to play wizard Rincewald (correction.. big typo.. sorry, it’s been a long morning already RINCEWIND!). He told The Sun: “I liked Hogfather, but The Colour of Magic is better.”

    RinceWIND.

And, much as I love Del Boy, that casting is terrible. There are twenty better characters for Jason to play in the Discworld books.

I’m an avid fan of Terry Pratchett (I all the books that have anything to do with Discworld) and in my opinion Sky’s Hogfather was truly awful. Awful! Acting was dreadful, Death was the biggest disappointment of all. Jason as Rincewind?! Are they serious! Shame on you Sky, I hope Virgin kicks your ass in court.

Never type in anger, keep missing words. I meant to say I read all the books.

I have to say, I agree. Hogfather is one of the Pratchett books that I enjoy less than others, but (although you could see they’d clearly gone all out to make it work) the adaptation left me cold.

But that’s sort of the thing about Pratchett, for me – so much of what I like about the books is impossible to reproduce in an adaptation to tv, film or stage.

Minor technical quibble … isn’t Sir Delboy a bit old to be playing Rincewind? From my memory of the early Discworld books, Rincewind may have been a slighty more mature student, but I don’t think he’d even reached middle age.

I think casting David Jason as Rincewind is a big mistake. There are so many comic actors that could pull it off better, lets see…. Rowan Atkinon, Simon Peg, Mackenzie Crook ,Russell Brand ,John Clees (a bit old maybe) or Nicholas Lindhurst ….but you get my point I always thought of him to be a wirey limber limbed sligtly awkward sort of guy, not a short plump old man.
