If you only watch one movie next week…

Toy_story_2Mof’s already mentioned Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, which would have appeared on my "worth a look" list this week (everything he says about it is true btw) but my choice for this week is the third Disney/Pixar collaboration; a film that represents that rare thing – a sequel that is better than its original.

Toy Story 2 – which according to Wikipedia is the all-time best reviewed film on RottenTomatoes.com with a 100% score from 106 reviews – was released in the US in 1999 and made $245million in its first run which at that time beat every animated film except the Lion King. But beyond this mercenary trivia it is, quite simply, a rattling good yarn heartwarmingly told, and with a good crop of movie homages thrown in to keep the grown-ups happy. Perfect fare for a Bank Holiday Monday!

Following the events of the first Toy Story, Andy is packing for summer camp and accidentally rips Woody’s shirt sleeve, resulting in Woody being left behind on the shelf with Wheezy the penguin – another broken toy. Andy’s mum puts Wheezy out for a yard sale, and Woody’s rescue attempt goes awry leading to him becoming part of the yard sale too. He is spotted by toy collector Al McWiggin, and when Andy’s mum refuses to sell Woody, McWiggin creates a distraction and steals him.

Buzz calls the other toys to order and launches a rescue mission, while Woody is taken to Al’s apartment. There he meets Jessie the cowgirl, his horse Bullseye, and the Prospector who explain that Woody is part of their set and the star of a discontinued children’s TV show called Woody’s Roundup. Woody was the last toy McWiggin needed to complete the set and he now plans to sell the toys to a museum in Japan.
