What’s this? Trainspotting scribe Irvine Welsh? Writing for the telly? It’s almost too delicious a thought to think about, but it’s true. He’s teamed up with screenwriter Dean Cavanagh to write Wedding Belles, a one-off film that follows the pre-wedding week of Amanda and her dysfucntional group of friends, as they prepare for the big day.
There’s a fantastic cast (including a Green Wing alumni), and Welsh being Welsh (and judging by the picture), I’m thinking that this will not be your ordinary wedding.
For Welsh’s first ever bitterweet TV comedy, the action is set in Leith. The terrific Michelle Gomez (Green Wing) stars as Amanda, the leader of the pack – a successful business woman who’s due to marry a bloke called Joshua, who’s an airline pilot.
Her bridal group comprises three of her oldest friends – they’ve raved together, they’ve loved together and cried together. There’s Rhona (Shauna McDonald), an ex-model who’s still mourning the death of her fiance, Kelly (the fantastic and sometimes rather squeaky Shirley Henderson) who can’t help but upset people, and Shaz (Katheleen McDermott) who works in an old people’s home selling Viagra to the randy residents.
All this is set up for a not-very-easy ride, and a set of revelations throws the whole thing into chaos. And there’s a gun in the picture, so that’s never a good sign at a wedding.
