So finally, it’s the Final – it seems to have been a long time coming. Remember when Neil (Dr) Fox went out? Seems like years ago. Kyran Bracken, Clare Buckfield and Duncan James were the remaining three contestants and had to perform two routines each after which one would be out and the final two would get to do something incredible – perform Torvill and Dean’s Ravel’s Bolero program. That’s such a famous and iconic performance. What an amazing opportunity to be taught it by Torvill and Dean themselves. I was excited by the idea and I’m not even a particular fan of skating.
For the first round of the final, skating wasn’t enough – oh no – they had to both skate and “fly”. On wires, of course. Torvill and Dean demonstrated first and it was actually something they hadn’t done together before. I found it thrilling. I think I actually preferred it to the skating.
Despite the fact that it was a bit peculiar seeing them flying around,
Kyran and Melanie’s routine gave me the shivers, but I am a bit of a
nelly where fireworks are concerned, they always give me a cheap
thrill. They didn’t finish quite in time with the music, but it’s
really impressive that they’ve got another new skill at this stage. He
scored 25.
Clare and Andrei’s routine was absolutely amazing and she clearly loved
doing it. It was magical and she really did look like she was flying.
The judges loved it too and she got four 6s and a 5.5.
Duncan was more awkward and it was more obvious that he was on wires,
but he put in some very challenging spins (40 rotations and spins,
apparently) and actually lifted his partner, which I liked. He scored
26.
Next they each had to perform their favourite routines from the series.
Kyran and Melanie plumped for Chasing Cars, which was my favourite of
their routines too. When they did it in Week 4 they scored 26. This
time they scored 27.
Clare said it’s every girl’s dream to be “picked up by a strong man in
the beautiful dresses we’ve got.” I’m wouldn’t say that was strictly
true, but I’m glad she enjoyed herself. Clare and Andrei chose their
Since You’ve Been Gone program, which I also loved. When they skated it
in Week 6, it scored 27. Last night they got four 6s and scored an
amazing 29.5 (bringing Clare’s total to a hugely impressive 59 out of
60!).
Duncan chose his Bamboleo routine, which seems like a long time ago. He
certainly doesn’t have the technical skills of the other two – and they
made a mess of one of the lifts – but he looked like he was having fun.
It was actually originally skated back in Week 2 and scored 22. This
time, despite the errors, it scored 27, including a 6 from Jason
Gardiner of all people.
Clare and Andrei and Kyran and Melanie went through to the Bolero
skate-off and Duncan and Maria skated off into the sunset. Well, off
… somewhere, anyway.
Torvill and Dean did a new “unplugged” version of the Bolero. It was
played by a clarinettist, standing on a plinth in the middle of the
ice. No, really. It was a slowed-down version and it was,
unsurprisingly, very beautiful.
It turned out only the beginning and end of the routine had to be the
same as Torvill and Dean’s Bolero, everything in between could be “of
their own creation”. Which was a bit of a rip-off, I thought.
Kyran and Melanie’s was gorgeous, exciting, thrilling and, I think,
flawless. It felt a little more understated than some of the routines,
but I absolutely loved it. Clare and Andrei’s skating was also flawless
and their routine was more dramatic than Kyran and Melanie’s. They
included a few extra elements from the original Bolero and it was
breathtaking.
Finally the result was announced and Kyran Bracken was announced as the Dancing on Ice Champion 2007.
But that’s not all, oh no. Tune in next week to see Kyran, Clare and Duncan take on last year’s finalists – Gaynor Faye, Bonnie Langford and Stephan Booth in Dancing on Ice: Champion of Champions.
