TV Review - Charlie Brooker's Screen Wipe, BBC4, Tuesday, 11pm

Charliebrooker When reviewing anything related to Charlie Brooker, certain words tend to crop up. "Irreverent" is one of the main ones. People who are actually quite frightened about what he's got to say quip "Brooker's takes an irreverent look at the world of TV! Ho Ho!" before mentioning his TV Go Home website and his column in the Guide.

Of course, I was going to rubbish all that, but by trying to be clever, I've mentioned all those things myself, so you read over the jump for a review of Charlie Brooker's Screen Wipe (BBC4, Tuesday, 11pm) and I'll give myself a good telling off in the meantime...

What are you? You're an idiotic dim-witted cun... Oh hello, on with the review.

Charlie Brooker may well be 'irreverent' and 'caustic', but to keep slapping him with the same old boiled ham compliments doesn't really do him justice at all. In short, Brooker is a very funny bloke with a keen eye and and opinions it's hard to disagree with. Of course, when he hits his bilious stride, he's an absolute riot. Of course, he's a little more forgiving when you see him in the flesh as his pen is mightier than his mouth. That said, he's still light years ahead of the pack. Let's put it this way. Harry Hill and his TV Burp is exactly that in comparison to Screen Wipe. It's a polite burp versus someone projectile vomiting into the back of a telly.

Again, I'm focusing on Brooker's anger, which is precisely what I wanted to avoid. The brilliant thing about Brooker is that he has a softer side to him which actually appreciates great TV. I know how easy it is to pick holes in terrible and often completely immoral TV shows (like You Are What You Eat), but it's the ability to stop being cynical and letting yourself get overawed by something so fantastic that you might actually cry. Writers like me will throw a joke in to save face. This is because I'm a complete child.

It seems pointless to dissect Screen Wipe, and to tell what programmes he looked at and the various sketches taken out by Brooker... because largely, they don't make much sense if you didn't see it. If you don't believe me, I'll dissect a bit for you now: We saw Ross Kemp gurning away with a woolly hat pulled over his face by some Russian gang members. It then brilliantly cut back to a shirtless and sneering Brooker beating his chest and making ape noises. See? It doesn't make sense unless you saw it. In short, Screen Wipe is brilliant and everyone should watch it. [Mof Gimmers]
