Ray Mears is a strange man. I understand the want to be self sufficient and swerve all that terrible greed that fills the world. I also understand that we’ll all wished we’d listened to him more when they drop the bomb. Impoverishing your life on purpose just seems odd. Still, he seems happy, and we should cherish his fine fine skills… and he probably doesn’t live like his shows all the time (I imagine he has a house).
Mears’ voyage of discovery into the lost foods of Britain’s Stone Age in Ray Mears’ Wild Food (BBC2, Wednesday, 8pm) takes him on a trip that draws on all his bushcraft skills and knowledge of ancient ways of life around the world. It’s obvious that Ray is happiest when he’s in the woods (not in a pervy way you understand…) pretending to be a hunter gatherer from a billion years ago. He makes fruit leathers from hawthorn and eats a wild boar. Sounds like a blast to me. Mears’ is an intriguing and serious man who will be ruler when this planet implodes. Start worshipping now.
