I can't honestly understand Richard Hammond's popularity. I really can't. He might just be the most annoying man on television. Whilst most gasped in horror when he crashed a very fast rocket car, I felt that I was the only one who thought "Well, it serves you right for driving a ridiculously fast car you moron".

Well, his return to BBC Two's Top Gear topped the first hour of Celebrity Big Brother's grand final last night with Top Gear averaging 7.9m viewers, which is over a quarter share of the audience.

The show peaked between 8.45pm and 9pm, which was when the footage of Hammond's crash in the jet-powered vehicle was aired for the first time, with 8.6m viewers tuning in. Again, because I'm cruel and mean spirited, I can only imagine that people were tuning in to snigger. In saying that, people actually like Hammond, and they wanted to watch him... well... survive? Sorry, I just don't understand why you'd tune in to watch him nearly die. It's surely not for the cheeky quips that follow is it? Whatever the reason, Top Gear slapped Big Brother across the face, and in a week which has seen the racism row, you can hardly blame people for wanting to watch something else can you? [Mof Gimmers]
