YouTube clip: AD/BC – A Rock Opera

Julian_1In 2004, BBC Three showed a fabulously funny, and quite affectionate parody of Jesus Christ Superstar, and I was hoping it might be repeated this Christmas, but alas that has turned out not to be the case.

AD/BC – A Rock Opera is a re-telling of the Nativity story, and was written by, and starred Matt Berry (Garth Marenghi’s Darkplace). It also features the Mighty Boosh’s musical maestro Julian Barratt, Richard Ayoade (he was in The IT Crowd, but don’t hold that against him), the fabulous Julia Davies (recently seen in Fear of Fanny) and a cameo by Matt Lucas as God. You just know it’s gotta be good.

So, if you want to see some bona fide comedy heroes singing in a funky, 60s Andrew Lloyd Webber-type way – and let’s face it, who wouldn’t – pop over the cut for a YouTube taster…

I tried watching it when it first aired and only lasted 10 minutes, I thought it was awful, maybe I should rewatch it what with now having an appreciation for Garth Marenghi.

Yeah, give it another go! My enjoyment is certainly heightened by knowing Jesus Christ Superstar quite well (much funkier than it’s given credit for – like a pyschedelic prog album) but I hope it’s funny even without that knowledge!

Is that really Richard Ayoade singing?

    Aye, it is Ayoade.
And I think only four of them sing properly – as well as the small appearances of the townsfolk.
    It’s pretty much amazing.
