Who is the best Doctor Who?

By johnberesford on December 8th, 2006 4 comments

David_tennant_2It’s Tom Baker, right? Well it was, until a recent poll in Doctor Who Magazine. After less than a year in the role, latest Doctor Who David Tennant has elbowed Tom into second place, securing 28% of the 4,000 votes cast by the magazine’s readers.

But hang on, who are these readers?

I mean, how many of them only ever started watching Doctor Who with Christoper Eccleston? The fact that Eccleston came third in the poll suggests that the demographic of voters doesn’t fairly represent the army of fans that has followed the adventures of the Doctor since his very first outing in 1963, but is more biased towards the "new" series.

Props to David Tennant for winning the poll. There’s no argument that he is a cool Doctor. There’ll only ever be one number one for me though, and he wears a long scarf and a floppy hat.

The top five in full:
David Tennant (28.2%)
Tom Baker (26.5%)
Christopher Eccleston (11.4%)
Jon Pertwee (9.6%)
Patrick Troughton (8.8%)

Well, obviously this vote was taken by people with a 15 second memory who a year BEFORE this would have put Christopher Eccleston top. It is meaningless.

It’s only natural to like the newest of something the most if you like it at all. I would probably vote David Tennant my favorite, too, even though I loved Peter Davidson and Collin Baker. (I never really liked Tom Baker that much.
