This year has thrown up some fantastic telly. Some of it has been unintentionally great (like Phil Schofield laying a smackdown on Paul Burrell) and some of it has just been plain genius. With British comedy having an off day with the likes of Russell Brand, The IT Crowd and Blunder, it was nice to see the US sending us one of the greatest comedy shows ever made. That show is the stupendous My Name is Earl.
My Name is Earl was a show that, on paper, should never have worked. Why? Just how funny does a comedy based on karma sound? Exactly. Before the first show, I was apprehensive, but willing to give it a chance because the excellent Jason Lee starred (and anyone who is a pro-skateboarder turned actor is fine by me). That moment when I decided to give it a go is one of the most rewarding television related things I’ve ever done.
The show is amazingly funny. Just the right amount of clever-clever gags, mixed with seam bursting laugh-out-loud moments with a pinch of slapstick. My Name is Earl might just be my favourite comedy ever made. Jason Lee’s performances as the hapless but well meaning Earl Hickey were a revelation. Thankfully, Lee was backed up by incredible performances from the rest of the cast, and most notably, Ethan Suplee who played the hilarious Randy, docile brother of Earl.
As the pair set off with a list of Earl’s wrongs to right, they did so with an amazing amount of killer lines offered by the incredible script. Each show threw out a misdemeanour from Earl’s past that was as funny as the way it was rectified. This was, and will continue to be, a programme that can do no wrong. As Earl pads his way around the list, he makes more errors which are subsequently added, meaning that this is a show that could go on for years and years. I’m very happy about this fact because the whole series was fresh, innovative, superbly acted, inspired and most importantly, hilarious. We need more of these on our screens now. [Mof Gimmers]

I adored My Name Is Earl. Incredibly warm, funny, bizarre at times, and in Earl we have such a cool character! Part Morgan Spurlock, part Dave Grohl. Fantastic.
Can’t wait for seres 2!
