I should probably preface this post by explaining that in describing this as one of the "best" TV moments of 2006, I don’t necessarily mean that I enjoyed it. Well, not as much as George Galloway’s political opponents probably enjoyed it, anyway. No, this was car crash TV at its very worst – I mean best. It was the kind of TV you have to watch from behind the sofa, cringing in horror at what you see before you.
In this case, what we seen before us was pretty damn cringe-making. Given a "find out if humans can communicate with animals" task by Big Brother, George Galloway threw himself into his role with abandon. "Now would you like me to be the cat?" he asked Rula Lenska creepily, before dropping to all fours and pretending to lick cream from her hands. There was an immediate uproar from Galloway’s constituents, who kind of wished they hadn’t voted for him when he started getting all creepy and cat-like. It was hard not to agree with them. As TV moments go, though, it was certainly memorable – you have to give it that.
