10 Worst shows of 2006

ItcrowdOK, we’ve all spoken about our favourite shows of 2006… but what of the dross that has infiltrated our goggle-boxes this year? Of course, it would be easy to pick out soaps and Big Brother and the like, but really, they’re meant to be trashy so don’t count.

So what got my back up this year? Well, read on, and because I presume you’ve noticed the picture to the left, it won’t surprise you that The IT Crowd features.

1. The IT Crowd – Ok, let’s get this out of the way. The IT Crowd was written by the team who gave us the brilliant Father Ted and as a huge bonus, this programme starred the brilliant Chris Morris. Couldn’t fail could it? Well, yes, and quite miserably too. The show looked horrible, had no jokes and worse still, made me question Chris Morris’ credibility. I’ll put it down to doing a favour for his mates… but please, no more series of this cack Channel 4.

2. My Hero – Ah, My Hero. With Ardal O’Hanlan getting out of the terrible show as fast as his little legs would take him, the creators decided to chuck in that bloke from Gimme Gimme Gimme in instead (who cares what his name is?). It’s so dire that the BBC’s comedy guide says this about it; "It’s certainly gentle, and it has been that rarity among modern-day comedies: family viewing. But it isn’t that comical."

3. Blunder – Another show that had promise (by virtue of the fact that it had David Mitchell from the marvellous Peep Show starring in it) but was so incredibly poor that people have reported to continually hit themselves unconcious with saucepans during viewing. The characters are as forgettable as their catchphrases… such as… him… with the black outfit… who… er…

4. You Are What You Eat – Gillian McKeith is a terrible human being – Fact.  She doesn’t have a joyful or caring bone in her spindly little body. Her face (that of a 3000 year old mummy eating lemons) spits abuse at rotund people who end up ignoring her advice but worrying the weight off anyway. When she was ripped to shreds on Celebrity X Factor, I suddenly understood the appeal of Simon Cowell (which has predictably subsided since that day).

5. Don’t Mess With Miss Beckles - Way back at the start of the year, BBC2 showed a programme called Don’t Mess With Miss Beckles starring the baffling Yolande Beckles. She was to help children get better grades. After she bulldozed her way through people’s lives, one child prematurely left the programme in stunned tears whilst another ended up homeless. Suffice to say, the BBC pulled it after three shows.

6. Robin Hood – God bless the BBC for trying. They threw a huge wad of cash at a show that was hoped to be watched by young and old… and what they got was a confusing assortment of accents and not nearly enough swashbuckling.

7. The Friday Night Project – The basic premise of this show could have made decent enough telly. Get a couple of funny people to host a show with a guest celeb mucking in. Instead of getting Dara O’Briain and Ross Noble plus one,  we got the loathesome Alan Carr and the I-actually-wish-him-harm Justin Lee Collins mooning around and being wacky… I gawd knows I despise wacky. It’s worth noting that one of these awful shows featured JLC with his hair straightened. That was the only laugh they got out of me.

8. Absolutely ANYTHING with Russell Brand in it – In short, I hate him. He’s not funny and he looks like a goth… and goth aren’t cool.

9. 8 out of 10 Cats – Sean Lock is a genius I’m told. I can’t see it myself. His gags lack punch and his delivery is average at best. Still, he’s not half as bad as Dave Spikey who, everyone knows, is the man you hire when you can’t afford Peter Kay. Still, Spikey crossed with Lock is nowhere near as ineffectual and wooden as the turgid guff that Jimmy Carr comes up with. Someone, please give him his P45.

10. The Vicar of Dibley – The worst comedy ever starring the worst comedian ever. The end.

You are SO right about The IT Crowd. (And so wrong about the Vicar of Dibley ;) )

An interesting list mof. I’ll agree with you on Blunder, You Are What You Eat, Robin Hood etc but not the comedies.

Vicar of Dibley, IT Crowd etc have their moments – they may not be brilliant but come on… what about all the daytime TV junk like Bargain Hunt… that’s a million times worse!

I didn’t think IT Crowd was that bad, a rather bland but mildly amusing sitcom, it was only decent when Noel Fielding cameoed steeling the show. Dissapointing? Yes, worse than Blunder and the Friday night project? Dear God No.

Where is the charlotte church show on your list? that’s car crash telly!

    Hurrah for easy targets!

Some interesting choices there people. The list is in no particular order and I’ve tried to balance out TV that’s plain offensive and shows that I had hopes for.

The IT Crowd is a prime example of that. It had Chris Morris in and “mildly amusing” isn’t good enough for a show containing him. Not to mention the Father Ted connection, various members of Nathan Barley and Boosh.

I considered the Charlotte Church Show, but in all honesty, it was always going to be dire… so it need noy feature in a list… it’s a bit like preaching to the converted on that one.

…and lastly, The Vicar of Dibley… sorry… the truth will out on this tepid nonesense of a show. I make it a rule to try and avoid any show containing Dawn French, Joanna Lumley and Jennifer Saunders… because they’re really not very funny.
    :)

You’ll be pleased to know Mof, that after supporting Vicard of Dibley, I’ve just been writing about how wonderful Russell Brand was on Big Fat Quiz of the Year! I swear I’m not doing this on purpose! ;)

  7. Salaryman says:

Pretty much anything that crawled out of Channel 4′s light entertainment dustbin. In particular the Brand/Carr/Lee Collins axis of evil
